I have a spare Delta decoder (PN 670040 from 33184 -- 3 pole DCM). I just converted it to digital with a ESU LokSound mfx.

I want to use this decoder in an older SFCM loco -- is the Delta decoder specific for a particular motor type, or can I fit it to an older SFCM?

Thanks.
Cheers,
Damon

Delta decoders work with all AC motor types. There should be no difference in the way it works with either SFCM or DCM (or LFCM for that matter).

Try it and see. What have you got to lose?

Only the smoke inside the IC's on the decoder! wink

Do the Delta decoders work with permanent magnet motors with the 5 pole rotors?
I have all the bits to convert my old locos to 5 pole/permanent magnet, but not the decoders. I will "trickle-down" the older decoders (like the Delta under discussion) until I have fitted all my olders ones with new decoders.
Cheers,
Damon

I did see a diagram somewhere showing how to connect a delta decoder for a DC motor, but I can't remember where.

I would say, save your new motor bits until you buy your new decoders and use the old ac motors with the delta decoders...

Or...get some cheap lokpilots (~25€) for your new motors.

A Delta decoder is a Mot. decoder with only 15 addresses available.
Most Delta decoders are designed for AC motors.
However, some Delta Loks have a DC motor driven by a spececific Delta DC decoder, such as BR55 (part #205956).
AC Deltas are suitable for any AC motor (with the exception of very old Loks, such as 3015 Krokodil).
DC Deltas are more specific and not every decoder will fit every motor.
Basic rule should be: if you have unisntalled a Delta from an AC-motor Lok, you can install it on another AC-motor Lok.
For DC-motor Loks, just try and see how it works.

The chip can handle 80 addresses, but only few Delta decoders have 8 address switches, therefore it requires some tricky soldering to get beyond the 15 addresses (and I think a Delta decoder isn't worth it).

It can be used for DC motors with some extra transistors (but I think a Delta decoder isn't worth it).

No! You'll have to modify the decoder.

There exist some webpages which describe this; as well the extension to 80 adresses and switchable function outputs.
