Hello everyone,

Here we have again a 2 rail DC loko ordered by mistake. But this time i liked it too much -also it has a great history in Turkish Railways- i decided to convert it.

My initial thought are as such: holes for pick-up shoes are already there so it is not going to be too much trouble. There already are cables running from the tender to the loko so i plan to place the decoder into the tender. i'd like to use an ESU Lokpilot or similar mfx decoder with sound.

This is going to be my first conversion; exciting!

Questions: what is the exact decoder i should use; i'd like to be able to run this machine on analog layout too. if using an mfx decoder with sound, can i separate the speaker and place it in the loko; i.e. do speakers come installed on decoder board and if installed on board is it possible to separate them? And finally, do i need anything else (apart from pick-up shoes and decoder)?

And here comes my beauty:

Thank you all!

Well, if this is a Hamo lok, you will getaway with simply one decoder and one collector shoe.

Have a look at the 3046, which is the AC version of your lok:

http://www.maerklin.de/s...r.php?artikelnummer=3046

Parts required for shoe installation:

206310
206280
7175
756100

As for decoder, it's really up to you. Obvious suggestions are:

Lokpilot v3
Lokpilotmfx
Loksound v3.5
Loksoundmfx

I have digitized 3046s and other old style BR44s, installing the decoder and speaker (they are separate, connected by two thin wires) in the tender.

The tender frame has a few small slots in the metal frame that will allow the speaker to breathe, but I always open a bigger hole, if possible, as big as the speaker diameter, using a milling machine.

If installing a Loksound or Loksoundmfx, you will benefit by discarding the 23mm speaker provided and buying a 28 mm one. Also discard the resonance box, I find that, in tender loks, the speaker will sound much better using the tender as the resonance box.

Have fun!

Luis

You said it's DC, so I suppose it has a permanent magnet, making it a Hamo version of the Märklin 3046. Should be a 8846, I think.

Yes, just what i thought! it indeed is a 8846 so just a collector shoe and decoder it is.

the last thing, will there be insulation issues. i remember somebody talking about insulated wheels causing problems so they had to be reconnected?

thanks a lot.

Yes, you should ensure that, internally, the left and right wheels are shunted. You should thus shunt the left and right current collectors and then connect that resulting common ground to the decoder ground.
