Hi friends

Here come a few photos from a ride i had some weeks ago on a few highly interesting Saxonian narrow gauge trains (75 cm) which are still in regular operation in the area around Dresden.

The Loessnitzgrundbahn maintains a daily traffic on the 18 km line Radebeul-Moritzburg-Radeburg, The trains are hauled by 2-10-2 tank locos over the partially very steep grades.

Here you see an articulated mallet loco, with 0-4-4-0 wheel configuration:

In the 18th century the saxonian king August der Starke once had his modest weekend cottage here:

(obvoiously with reasonable space for an adequate MRR layout, isn't it ? But as you know they missed this great hobby in those days)

Finally a photo from the Kirnitzschtalbahn, a tram passing along the small creek since more than 100 years. The line starts in Bad Schandau, 30 km south east of Dresden. It is now powered by solar energy, BTW.

I can also recommend a visit in the Tillig model railroad museum in Sebnitz (didn't have my camera with me that day, so I have no photos), with a nicely presented collection of model trains from the earliest days on. The adjacent shop has mostly DC stuff, but you'll find also a good stock of H0e/H0m narrow gauge stuff here, also interesting for us M* railroaders.

If you have a chance to visit Dresden (Frauenkirche, Semper opera, Zwinger, etc.), don't forget that there is a lot of live steam railroading (and steam-boating) around.

Hi Hans Martin,

First, thanks for sharing the pictures. Especially the third one impresses me. I love those Mallet and Meyer machines. No offence but I think the loco-type of this one is a Meyer, not a Mallet. See:

(sorry, link is only in German.)

Hi Sander, thanks for posting this interesting link. You are right, the loco is a Meyer construction, not a Mallet: both trucks are on separate frames.

Thank you, Hans Martin!

Nice photos. By some strange reason, our summer cottage looks a little bit different.

Alberto,

Dresden and many of the steam railroad locations is situated in the valley of the Elbe river, around 200 km south of Berlin. You'll find more infos here: http://www.saxon-steam.com/
