I started up a 3034 and it made a loud screeching noise as heard from the video. I put drops of oil onto the gears underneath and the small sponge by the motor shaft but they didn't help. Any idea what causes the noise? Thanks.

Sounds like a screw is rubbing on a gear. Has it had any work done to it? Like a motor conversion.

There is absolutely no doubt you have NOT lubricated properly
If you have lubricated the motor axles (Little sponges) and each axle on each side (ideally using Märklin oil and a small seringe) then remains the intermediate gears between the rotor and each drivng axle (at least 3 gears and axles inbetween
Ideally a bit of Trix grease on the teeth (very very little).

Then all is fine

Because Märklin's exploded view diagram does not show this part of the gears, here is my opened 3034 loco (first version 1960)
Here is the detail of the motorized bogie and the 4 separate axles to lubricate (numbers in red)
Sans titre.png

Here is the global view of the 3034 once opened
- remove the casing
- remove the rear coupler
- remove the screw under the bogie

If you don't open the loco, the gears are pretty well hidden
NOTE: the closer to the motor, the faster the gears rotate and so absence of lubrification shows more on those (especially the number 4 hidden inside the motor cavity)

Cheers
Jean
