I bought cheap brass rail, miles of it, the idea was for a garden layout, any one converted Marklin/Jouef/Hornby trains to dead rail? Seems a cheaper option than other out door systems. CHEAP is the word for the controllers! Options ? Remote for 12 volt lighting systems £5 a pop? Reverse might be a problem I suppose.

Thanks, but, a low cost solution work around , RC cars seem have systems cheap as chips, It appears over engineered to what I am looking for. Not hitech blue tooth etc. Thanks anyway

There is a German Stummiforum discussion about operating a train with a 9v block battery on dead rails:

https://www.stummiforum....ner-v-Blockbatterie.html

The degree of complexity depends on whether you only want to switch a train on or off or also want to control the speed. Reference is made to this gizmo:

P.S.: Märklin My World trains are running on dead rails: https://www.maerklin.de/en/products/my-world

Am I right in thinking that much of the old three rail M track has brass rails?

Not sure, the track I have is HO Jouef. I have a couple of Hornby kids 9v dead rail trains (£5) with a trailer car but reverse is a problem using a £4 remote light dimmer control.

Just had an idea, why am I trying to reinvent the wheel. Just buy a kids 9v remote control train, rip the gubbings out and adapt it to suit.

That's what I wanted to imply with my post scriptum at the end of post #5. The Hornby Playtrains sortiment looks similar to the Märklin My World one in terms of concept, controller and pricing. I think your approach is very interesting and would like to be kept up to date on the progress.

How about using the Hornby Playtrains Solo Controller - see link?

Thanks looked that but the receiver is not included, can't find it as a spare part or even a schematic. When i do find a sensible price 2nd hand train with a rc, I will post photos and sizes, never know, might be able to get it down to 009, too big for Z
