Hi all,

IMG_5940.mov (16,104kb) downloaded 27 time(s).

I was working on my layout and went to use the turntable to make it run and also access one of my locomotives that is in the shed. After a couple of uses, it started making a racket, became so sluggish and generally looked like it was struggling.

I have inspected it, looked at the gears with no obvious issues. This is a turntable that is over 40 years old now, I had it professionally serviced last year and it was running really well.

I added a video, I’m hoping to get some ideas on what it might be.

In case the video doesn’t work, here is a link to it:

I will call it a night and have another go at fixing it tomorrow, perhaps I’ll change the brushes and see what happens.

Many thanks,

Eddie

Hey everyone,

So a quick update, I changed the brushes and cleaned the commutator, this was caked with carbon.

The issue though related to the clutch mechanism, I took it out and gave it a good clean and re-oiled.

I thought about getting the new turntable but I decided to keep this one in service. That will save me from having to route out a massive hole on my table.

Hi Eddie,
I think you are wise keeping hold of this turntable. Judging by all the issues that get posted on here regarding the fragile modern versions these old clunkers may be slow and noisy but they are properly and solidly built. With a bit of attention now and then they will probably outlast the newer ones.
Sounds like you've got to the bottom of the problem. Nice one!

Marklin HO using M track. Now reverted to analogue as I find it has more character and is more fun...... and I understand it!

Hi Eddie
Those turntables are indestructible.
Nothing a good cleaning, a little lubrication can prevent a 7186 from renning
Here is my 75 years old 7186 (called 410 NG at the time).

Cheers
Jean

Hi Paul,
I heard about those issues with the newer turntables. While digital is great and all, it also brings a whole new layer of problems too.

I have to admit, I get a bit of an anxiety prodding around in the mechanics but it all worked out!

I am wondering whether these old turntables are able to be upgraded with the 5 pole commutator and cover - might give it a power boost.
