Hi all,
I’m looking around for an effective cleaner for my tracks and locomotive.
I will be converting an old Marklin analogue locomotive soon and wanted to give it a good clean before the conversion.
Looking online, I wanted to get my hands on SR24 but I can’t find it locally and it’s unable to be shipped. I also looked for the new Marklin smoke distillate and cleaner, but have the same problem.
The next product I found is from Massoth, they have a smoke distillate & cleaner that is not classified as dangerous goods. I found a store in Australia that stocks it and may be able to ship it to me.
So my question is, has anyone used this product and let me know your experience? The first priority for the product is to clean locomotives, the secondary will be the track. I’m just concerned over how the product reacts to plastic and paint, so thought it would be good to ask what your experience is.

I use mineral spirits (white spirits) for track cleaning. Just apply to a rag and wipe the rails.
For removing accumulated oils and carbon, I use Ronsonol lighter fluid. It has the pin hole nozzle that allows either a few drops or a stream of fluid. In my experience, it does not harm or discoloration to any parts of the chassis or electrical components. I place a rag or paper towel under the locomotive, and it seems to draw the fluid and grime away.

Hello Eddie,
The dealer in Brisbane is Nathan's Trains - has a website.
I use pure Eucalyptus oil (Bosistos) in which I can literally bathe my models using a brush to remove accumulations.
I am talking about old Hornby Dublo including the motor and suppressors - the models are all die-cast and metal parts.
(Something like the older analogue Märklin.)
They all come out unscathed.
I can''t be too sure how modern stuff and electronics would cope, as all my Märklin are new and digital and have not required a clean up.

I too use lighter fluid. It seems to be available anywhere that sells cigarettes.
