Hi all,

I just bought a second hand class 16 from the SNCB / NMBS, Marklin 3163. I also have the same one in a different livery (no 3363).

As I was just starting out, I sent the 3363 to someone who converted it to digital. They used the sound file that corresponded to a similar locomotive from the Netherlands and added some extra station announcements in Flemish I found online (though these are not too clear).

This time, I was thinking of converting the 3163 myself and use the LokSound 5 decoder. I know I need the Marklin 5 pole motor kit 60941 and also change the front / rear lights - this fairly simple.

The reason for using the LokSound 5 is because I found the sound for this locomotive on the ESu website. Unfortunately, the sound does not include the station announcements. What I did find was the other locomotives have the station announcements.

So my question is, is it possible to program the decoder with the correct class 16 sound file and add station announcements from another sound file?

I hope that makes sense, these things can be hard to explain.

Also, o noticed there are so many LokSound 5 decoders, is there any recommendations on which one I should use?

Yes - but ... you will need a Lokprogrammer hardware, and I would recommend using a Decoder tester with it while loading the sound file. It is possible to transfer the bits you want from one sound file to another while both are open in the Lokprogrammer software. You will need to deal with what sound slots you want to put the sound in and how to map them to individual function keys to fire the sounds off.

I would recommend you become a member of the Loksound group on groups.io if you plan on getting involved in doing this. There are a number of very skilled people who have got programming sounds in Loksound decoders down to a very fine art, and can help with the intricacies of mapping functions to sounds.

There is really only about three decoders, the normal Loksound 5, the Mini Loksound 5, and the Nano Loksound 5. The other thing that defines them is the type of connector they have, is it wires (possibly with an NMRA 8 pin plug), is it a 21 pin MTC connector, or a PLuX 22 connector, or a Next 16 pin, and there are a couple of other variations that I can't think of at the moment.

For ease of doing things, and on the assumption that there is sufficient room in the loco, I would suggest you use a decoder with 21 pin MTC connector. This plugs onto a mother board from which you run all the wires to motor and lamps etc. so it doesn't matter if you are a bit ham fisted with soldering, you may ruin just the motherboard instead of a quite expensive decoder.
