I am a new Rocrail (basic user),

I have spent the past few days getting familiar with the software, connecting to the ECoS, and running some locomotives. Works well!

My question is:

What some of big differences between:

Rocrail basic (no subscription key)
Rocrail basic with key
and Rocpro

I some off the online instructions I see that there are colors on the tabs when locomotive functions are activated, but I do not see that option in basic (without the key).

12 Euro per year seems to be very inexpensive for the use of the system in my opinion. So I do not mind donating now that I think this will work for my layout. I do not think I am needing RocPro, especially since I am just starting with my first software system.

Best regards,

Rich S.

Hi Rich,

Welcome to rocrail usage. Once over the modest learning curve its a great option for controlling model trains.

You will have seen the feature list for rocrail-pro already?
https://wiki.rocrail.net/doku.php?id=supportkey-en

I've found the feature used the most was connecting to the server via a web browser (iPad) to use a rocview. The alternative is using multiple computers running rocview and connect to one rocrail server.
The train images in blocks are a nice touch but it is certainly not critical to have either of those things. I find it more helpful most of the time to see the names of the train and consists instead.
I've also used the virtual automatic mechanism to allow for testing train flow while away from the physical layout.

I agree it is a small cost; i have purchased a support key for myself after getting excellent support from Rob on an application crashing issue.

I'm sure Jean will add some other things, such as he uses the XML functionality for custom logic.

Hopefully that is helpful

For me, the major difference is the availability of XML scripting. Without XML, I would never have achieved the kind of automation I now have implemented on my setup.

RocRail "Pro"... Is that a new thing?

Their website has almost no information about it.

The relevant Rocrail web page says:

"A valid SupportKey will activate Rocrail Pro, wich contains Rocrail Basic plus all off the extras. You can use your SupportKey on all your computers."

How long they have used this sillyish term is not known to me. Nevertheless, the deal still is a bargain.

After getting the support key, which only took 24 hours, I was able to enable color on the locomotive function keys when activated, add some additional throttle control items - like a speedometer. I'm just in the beginning stage of learning this software. But so far I do like it a lot.....BigGrin
