I have a Marklin ICE Model 2. I got the BordRestaurant car for Christmas. How do I decouple the cars to add in the BordRestaurant car?

It seems that once the cars are coupled I cannot decouple them without the risk of breaking the plastic coupling. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Which model number set is it? The starter sets have odd couplers. They look like white plastic. They ae not current conductive. They likely uncouople by raising up one car from the other, but I don't have one, so not sure. If they are electric couplers, and not the pin type, I don't know either. Find the manual on the Marklin site if it is still there. It should tell how.

Hi marklinist5999,

Thanks for your help on this. We have model #29792, Digital-Startpackung "ICE 2". And I have reviewed the manual, but it only shows a picture on p. 4, which I think is to show how the cars decouple. However when I try to pull them apart I fear the plastic will break before the coupling actually releases.

Below is a link to the manual. I would be very happy to hear your thoughts. Thanks again.

I have a starter set ICE1 which has the same challenges. To help uncouple I use my swiss army knife (any other would do too). I put the sharp end of the blade of the knife between the couplers (on a straight track). Then I gently rotate the knife to force the couplers apart. For me this method works well and applies minimal force to other parts. I too did not want to force the couplers and never used the plain pulling method from the manual.

That seems like the best method. A delicate motion. Some models have intricate couplings. Guy at Ajckids has a video on the Marklin TGV which is also tricky. The sbb Giruno has a button on the underside of the cars, but care must be taken to keep the train on a level straight track section when coupling together or the wheels won't be all on the rails. A decoupling tool is included. The button will only release if the cars are level or tilted up slightly from the opposite ends. Lifting at the uncoupling point doesn't.
In the ICE 3, the manual says not to couple and uncouple too frequently or the couplers may not stay together. I suspect that the ICE 4 is the same.

Hi Bert,

Thanks very much for the "Swiss army knife" recommendation. Worked like a charm. Really appreciate it.

We decoupled the cars, added the BordRestaurant car, and we're back in action.

Plastic clips/latches have a habit of becoming very settled and hard to seperate first-time.

As you will have found, some gentle persuasion usually works to release them, and I bet you'll also find that second time round they uncouple much easier.

It won't hurt to seperate the coaches every now and then, ie once a year probably sufficient just to keep the ability to seperate a little smoother than if left too long.

Cheers, Steve

I had the same question once and slowly turning a tiny screw driver in the gap moves them apart. Unfortunately, one arm broke over the years. I drilled a hole across the couplers and use a tiny metal wire to lock. They rarely need uncoupling, so it's working for me.
