Hello

I want to learn about the motors in Marklin locomotives. When operating, do the motors use AC or DC power?

Thanks

Some use DC (c90 motor, can motor, coreless motor), some use some sort of AC (brushless motor AKA C-Sine motor), some work with either AC or DC (AC/DC motor - AC or DC when analogue, DC when digital with c80 or Delta decoder).

Hello and welcome !

The recent Digital Märklin locomotives are using a DC motor driven by a decoder.
The tracks are powered by a digital controller which sends some kind of pulsed DC signal.

The old analog locomotives are using an AC motor , and the tracks are powered by an AC regulator.
Here are some documents about the old AC locomotives:

Hope this helps.

Best Regards

The motors originally used in Marklin locos are what are known as 'universal motors' because they will run on AC or DC, and will always turn the same direction. Marklin use what is generally called a reverse mechanism that changes the connection to the field coil to change the direction of motor rotation. You can see this in the details given above.

Once Marklin started using digital decoders they changed to DC motors, with the earliest motors changed by replacing the field coils with a permanent magnet.

I think we covered this before, but don't digital controled models since at least the 5 ***** pole motor, or FX rectify ac to dc via the decoder?

In the days of 6080 and Delta decoders, most locos still had the "universal" AC/DC motors, not DC motors.
The 6090 decoder came with the c90 DC motor and introduced load regulation.

Those are AC/DC motors that work with AC or DC.
