Dual Traction Marklin Ms2 - Trying to get 2 Steam Locomotives to run together as one.

Joined: 03/12/2024(UTC) Posts: 3 Location: Zuid-Holland		New to this platform anddo not own anything myself. It's for my dad. Question says most. We're trying to get 2 Marklin MFX(?) steam engines to run together on a Mobile station 2. I'm still pretty new to everything myself so sorry if I'm unclear on anything. 2 Baureihe 44's. I don't know the exact Marklin nr but I know they are pretty new. Knowing my dad they are not identical (Different Marklin sets). I have been looking into changing the loc addresses but you can't on MFX. I know with MFX that the loc has it's own address nr and that you can't change it on Ms2. How do I want to approach this? Do I want to change the CV adress? (I'm not sure what exactly a CV adress is). I have also read people that switched to DCC? But I'm also unsure if that is the easiest way of doing it. Joined: 10/02/2021(UTC) Posts: 3,604 Location: Michigan, Troy		You can only put both on the track far enough apart so they won't crash. Then toggle between the two to start abd stop, chabge speed. You only have one speed control unless you get a second MS2 and it plugs into the second port of the track box.

Joined: 03/12/2024(UTC) Posts: 3 Location: Zuid-Holland		Not really what I'm looking for. I don't want 2 separate trains but 2 locs in one train. I remember he used to have an old grey mobile station where that was possible. But with the Ms2 we can't find a solution.

Joined: 04/02/2011(UTC) Posts: 3,428 Location: Paris, France		Hi Damian One solution to run 2 locos like one using an MS2 is about: - disabling on both locos the MFX protocol - assigning to both locos the same address - checking that both locos have the same running parameters Disable on both locos the MFX protocol - edit the CV 50 by writing 7 (it was = 15 to allow all protocols, now, only MFX is disabled. Doing so, now both locos respond to DCC orders If you prefer control them using MM2 then instead of CV50=15, make CV50=7 Check both locos have the same running parameters - install both locos in a loop or rails but quite apart of the other and open the throttle - both loco should run in the same direction - both loco should have the same speed (reduce a little the speed of the faster one WHILE THE OTHER LOCO IS NOT ON THE RAILS - both locos should have similar braking and acceleration (otherwise adjust one one loco WHILE THE OTHER LOCO IS NOT ON THE RAILS Doing all this you should be in business Cheers Jean

I would bet that on the ms1 you were using an MM address for both locos (as descibed by Jean), as the ms1 also does not have double heading facility.

(When I'm done changing the locs and wish to run multiple locs at once) As you know, disabling MFX allows to pilot locos in DCC, while disabling MFX and DCC allows to pilot locos in MM2. We do this because both in DCC and MM2, YOU can select the address. This protocol restriction on these 2 locos is of course: - reversible (you can, anytime, allow the use of MFX and DCC). - does not affect other locos as long as you keep all protocols on your MS2 Cheers Jean

For example, I did a shell swap of the 37446 Re 482 with the Trix 22631 and changed the MFX address from Re 482 036 to Re 482 046. I have also changed other models where it was needed due to shell swap or duplicate models. Go into the modify settings option and change the name of the locomotive = mfx address Regards Mike C

You cannot even see the mfx address of a loco using MS2. You can change the display name of the loco using MS2. Each decoder should have a globally unique serial number. The local mfx controller assigns a locally unique mfx address based on the serial number. The display name is just for display.

Joined: 04/02/2011(UTC) Posts: 3,428 Location: Paris, France		Hi Yes using a CS3 or CS2 the MFX cannot be changed (cannot access the area) AND furthermore, if by any chance two locos have the same number (it happened to me a few times when MFX registering a loco in absence of the other locos), the Märklin MFX system will change the MFX number of one of the 2 locos so that there are NO duplications. I follow this because, using Rocrail, a change in MFX number by the CS3 must be updated in Rocrail (so can't ignore it) Cheers Jean
