I am setting up a 1968 Marklin set that I have had since I was a kid. Although I have set this set up several times before, it has been years. There is m track with wires to power the track and then there is m track with no wires but instead has two little silver outlets. I assume these are used also to power the track but which one is power and which is negative? Can anyone help?

No they are not to power the track. They are used to operate signals and/or points.

The feeder track had brown and red cables soldered to the underside. The studded track used in 1968 should not have had the sockets to connect other items other than specific contact tracks (rail or slider contact). The track sections with socket existed on the earlier tracks with solid third rail that was designed to provide the ground (return) for signals, trackside lights and other devices (uncoupler, original sound module, etc). This would be combined with the yellow (blue cable) lead from the transformer to power signals and some switches.

Do a search for images of Marklin 5103 and 5111; tracks looking like those images are the only ones to power your layout and, as Mike said, will have brown & red cables soldered to the underside. The track part numbers on the underside may say 5100 and 5106, but only because those are the unpowered tracks' numbers like the rest of your set; Marklin soldered wires to 5100 and 5106 to create 5103 and 5111 but didn't re-mark them.

Marklin 5104, 5105, 5146 and 5147 are the ones with the two silver female plugs. They are contact tracks and switching tracks for controlling the items Mike mentions.

I really appreciate the help. Now I think I can at least get power to the track and I will figure out the other stuff as I go. I truly appreciate your expertise!

Download the manual in this post "Maerklin Miniature Railway Handbook" down near the bottom of the post. You will find lots of other useful books and manuals there and the posts above and below that one which will help you.

Check out the manual for the points "5117 and 5202 points" that is in an earlier post, and also the 0340 signals manual.

Like this?
contact rail.jpg
Contact rail for occupancy feedback sensor (like s88), using ground bridge through passing wheels. Not for power.

Thank you. I am currently working on all the track to make sure I have a good connection and to add additional track with wire to be sure the track has plenty of power.
