Hi all! I have a 60214 CS2 with a really old software installed. It has version 1.2.1! Can I update this over the internet? Is it that simple? Just plug it to the wlan and hit update?
Or should I/do I have to use USB? Is there anything else I need to think about before updating?
The Märklin update page doesn't tell me much other than updating from v3.something and up.

Tried to search the forum, but did'nt find the answer to my q.

Looking forward to get informed so I don't mess things up 🙂

Connecting to the internet is probably the best way, as it is a two step process to get from that revision to the current revision. The cs2 will reboot at least twice before the update is complete.

Update: seemed that another (or 3?) reboots later it wanted to initiate the update. I suspect that it had no internet for some reason.
But now it failed after having v3.81. Trying to do some more reboots and try again. Loads of errors on the update screen....

And now it seems to update. Crossing fingers :D

Hi Carllie
I know that for v3.6.0 update there has been a major change even in the bootload process if I remember correctly.
Here is what Märklin says about updating a CS2 (translated from German)

The current software version for the USB update is 4.2 (with GFP 3.81).

If you cannot update the CS2 over the network, an update to software version 4.2 can be installed using a USB stick. To do this, please proceed as follows:

• Download the cs2update.img (128MB) and save it to a USB stick in the main directory. The CS2 Update file (cs2update.img) can be found at the top of the download area. After confirming the license agreement, you can download the file.

• Insert the USB stick when the Central Station is ready for use and then call up the function setup : CS2 : [Program update] or setup : CS2 : Update : [USB stick] in the Central Station setup.

• The exact process of the USB update is explained in the document CS2_update_Info_ab_3_6.pdf (0.5MB).

Voila, I hope it will help you
Cheers
Jean

Hi Carllie
Here is the detailed information sheet by Märklin about CS2 update (Translated from German)
The original note in German is here https://www.maerklin.de/fileadmi...2_update_Info_ab_3_6.pdf

Dear Märklin Digital users,
since the update to version 3.6.0 for the Central Station 2 (No. 60213 to 60215),
an advanced procedure for this procedure has been introduced for this generation of devices.
We would therefore like to inform you about the procedure below.

The update can be carried out using a direct LAN connection from the Central Station 2 to a router connected to the Internet. This is the simplest, most convenient and
most up-to-date solution.
If, however, you do not have the option of using a direct Internet connection, you can also copy the relevant data from the Märklin website at
http://www.maerklin.de/d...nloads/software-updates/
to a USB stick.
Corresponding USB sticks are available, for example, from computer retailers. Below we present this method of updating using a USB stick.
One of the features of the Central Station 2 that most of our customers appreciate are the updates that are offered on a regular basis, with which additions and additional options can be added to the device. This update ran before software version 3.6. without explanations or options for the customer to influence it. Since version 3.6., this update process has been completely changed and combined with a clear menu navigation. You can check which software version is on your device in the "Setup" menu in the "Version" submenu.

Step 1:
For this update, you need a USB stick with a storage capacity of at least 1 GB and a maximum size of 8 GB. Tip: To be on the safe side, save any important data you may have on it to a suitable device (e.g. PC) beforehand. On the Märklin website at
http://www.maerklin.de/d...ds/software_updates.html
please download the following files from the website into the main directory on this USB stick:
- cs2update.md5
- cs2update.img

Tip: To transfer this to the USB stick, please plug it into a free USB port on your PC that is connected to the Internet. Go to the website mentioned above. Position the cursor on the desired file and press the right mouse button. A selection menu opens in which you select the sub-item "Save target as...". In the new "Save" window that now opens,

select the USB stick as the storage location and confirm this selection. Please carry out this procedure
for both files one after the other.
Step 2:
Now insert the USB stick into the USB socket of the operational Central Station 2.
Only for owners of a CS 2 with a software version before 3.6.:
Switch to the "Setup" menu and press the "Update program" button.
After the update, the Central Station is restarted and the new
update process is activated.
Step 3:
In the next step, the new update process is now applied. The Setup menu item looks like this:
Under "Update" you can now choose whether the update is to be carried out via the USB stick or via the network. Users of the USB stick should therefore now select the "USB stick" button.

In both cases, a new display opens from which you can see which
new update packages are available. You can display further information for each package if you wish.
Step 4:
Pressing the "Start" button now starts the update. During the update, different information about the status of the update appears. It is not possible to transfer only partial packages.
Please note that this update can take a long time (up to 1 hour).
Do not interrupt this process. Under no circumstances should you switch off the power supply to the Central Station. Otherwise the system could end up in a state from which the user can no longer activate it.

Step 5:
After a successful update, please only (!) press the "Next" button. If you press the cross or the check mark instead, the update has not been fully installed. If you attempt to update again, the program will continue at this point.
Only pressing "Next" will implement the changes and make them available after a restart.

I hope this helps
Jean

Thank you for the info, I did have that beforehand.
My concern was more of the ‘does it work from such an old verison?’. Reason being I didn’t find any info on this.
Well after a couple of freezes of the CS2, I left it over night, and came to a blank screen. Crossed my fingers and cut the power, then on power up it took a while before anything appeared on the screen. But after a couple of more reboots and final updates I’m now on version 4.3.0(11)!

So for those of you that reads this and has a really old software version and are as concerned as I was; Plug your CS2 to your wlan and be very patient and cross your fingers that the CS2 continues to update if it freezes (cause it seems like it does that every time ;))

Ah, good to hear, I didn't think that Marklin would have removed that all important update where they changed the required file format for the next update.
