I believe they used covered hoppers (2-axle and 4-axle) from 1958 on. Reference here "opening roof, gravity unloading" (about 2/3 of the way down the page):

The 2-axle version is like this example, although this particular model is Era V. Not sure if Märklin made an Era III version
