I have an old 3000 that has had an older de-coder which has given up the ghost. I have a lokPilot 5 (59610) and I have a problem. The older (ancient) 3000 has an outside coil motor. As far as I can tell the orange and grey wires go to that coil, the red to the center rail slider, black to the frame for a ground, white is the front light and yellow is for the rear light. What is missing is the old de-coder had a wire that went to a resistor(?) that is connected to one of the brushes. Will this lokPilot 5 de-coder not work? Or, am I missing something?
I would post a picture. But, I cannot figure out how.

Hi,

There used to be a way to drive an AC motor with the lokpilot decoders, but the performance suffered compared to a DC motor.

To get the best out of the decoder you should consider either a replacement “Hamo” magnet(ESU 51961) , or one of Märklin’s 60943 5 pole motor upgrade kits.

Thanks for the reply. While I have had Marklin trains since the sixties, I am not up to date on “modern” Marklin equipment. For instance, I don’t know how to tell an AC vs DC motor. This 3000 has had a five pole motor upgrade. But, it still has the external magnet and is using the original motor housing. And it has been long enough that I do not remember which de-coder i have installed. But it ran for years. It is a little more than twice the size of the new 59610 LokPilot 5 de-coder that I am trying to install.

Hi Keyser (No first name?)
The 3000 has a coiled inductor for which many (most?) decoders are helpless.
So to have a smooth running you need to:
- either replace the inductor by an ESU magnet inductor
- or to replace the motor by the appropriate Märklin one.

I am unprecise because, depending on your 3000 production year you may have a SFCM (Small flat collector motor) or a DCM (Drum collector motor) and the ESU inductor or the M. replacement motor is different.

Alternately you may:
- use an "All current" decoder or,
- insert a diode in series with each inductor winding (one in each direction). This solution is very simple but the result is disappointing (no regulation and reduced motor torque

Here is an "All current" loco (Märklin 3015) I fitted with a normal decoder and 2 diodes

The loco works but as said no regulation and reduced torque (pulling power)

Cheers
Jean

Thanks again for your reply. I have been trying to do that. I found how to copy the existing layout to another page. The issue that I am having is that the very edge of the original layout does not transfer to the new page. I have even found how to delete the parts that do transfer. But I am left with an empty page that I cannot make go away. So I have two questions: 1) how can a make the WHOLE layout transfer to the new page. 2) how can I delete the empty pages as when I try to move the original layout I have to move it to a new page and not to the existing blank pages.

No hurry as I am coming to your neck of the woods next week.

Not sure what you mean by pages (zones for the synoptic?
For Märklin there are 2 types of pages
If yes this is how you create them (normal layout page or synoptic page)
CS3 Add new page.png

How to delete a page?
- select the page
- delete all items contained in the page
- then a garbage can is displayed to delete the page
CS3 Delete page.png

How to copy a page to another?
- select the page you want
- set the selection mode into ZONE
CS3 Selection mode=zone.png
- zoom out to view the entire layout
- select the zone to copy
CS3 Select items in page.png

Now paste the selected item in the new page
CS3 Paste selection.png
Cheers
Jean
