Hi all, hope you can help me out with this one. I recently picked up a 6021 control unit off ebay for $75. This will be my first foray into digital. I have a few loks with delta decoders but want to upgrade them to take advantage of the load regulation the digital decoders offer. However, I didn't realize until just now, reading the manual of the 6021, that it requires an external transformer.

Can I use my 6646 as a power supply for the 6021? Connect the accessory yel/brown of the 6646 to the corresponding yel/brown of the 6021? From what I'm reading my 6646 is 32va rather than 42va of a 6001, but my layout is very small, with only three or four loks and four turnouts, so if I understand this correctly, I do not believe I need the extra voltage that the 6001 offers. Is this correct?

What he is trying to say is use the transformer's Yellow and Brown terminals to power the 6021.

And Yes, you can certainly use your 6646 transformer with your 6021. What you will not get is the ability to use the full output capabilities of the 6021, as the 6646 is only a 32va transformer whereas the 6001 is 42va. It just means you won't be able to run as many locos or coaches with lights etc.



It isn't a voltage issue as both transformers will deliver the same voltage, rather the issue is a current delivery issue. The 6001 can deliver more current than the 6646. However if as you say you are only going to be running a few locos then the 6646 will be fine...

At this point I'm laughing hysterically as any Märklin enthusiast knows a few locos will before long become a dozen which then becomes 50, and so it goes on. Just be aware that this is a disease for which there is no known cure, but temporary treatment is available with the appearance of new Märklin boxes...
