Hi all,

I had a question about yellow vs warm white lighting in passenger cars. Specifically, what Eras, or better yet decades, do each represent.

I know warm white is "newer," but is there something to date this to with some timeline for the changeover? Kerosene to electric? Edison bulbs to indandescent? etc etc

Or an alternate theory- is the yellow LED not realistic for any timescale at all?

What I'm trying to sort is what the two represent in real life and accuracy for a time period, moreso then what we think would look good just because one is "older" than the other

Thanks for insights in advance!

As I understand it the lighting moved to a white light in era 3 with the new rolling stock and rebuilds. The older yellow lighting is meant to represent the earlier equipment.

Go for a slightly cooler light & stick a Rosco gel in front of the LED (flex into place, maybe a spot of glue here & there).

Get a 3 x 6" swatch book to start with US$30, worth its weight in gold!

Once you work out the exact colour filter buy a bigger sheet. Maybe even get away with 2 very pale gels.

Don't forget you will loose a bit of brightness, maybe a good thing.

I just use a best guestimate of what a coach was likely to have as lighting.

If it is a modern coach that would have fluorescent lighting then use cool white LEDs.
An older coach that is likely to have traditional incandescent bulbs then use warm white LEDs.
Even older stock that had gas lighting, or maybe incandescent lighting of low wattage, then use yellow LEDs.

Essentially it comes down to what looks right in your eyes.

Thanks guys, ERA II is what I'm contemplating, even moreso with coaches leftover and/or repainted into DRG livery from the end of ERA I.

Presumably yellow either way then? Or warm white on the 1930s-built stock?

In a few of my coaches using the new Maerklin LED panels, I used a bright white one for the non-smoking compartment and a yellow for the smoking section.
For newer fluorescent type lighting, the blueish white LEDs can be used.

I wish that more manufacturers would include the following features on their light strips, especially those used for modern compartment coaches:
1) LEDs for the corridor side of the coaches
2) Digitally selectable LEDs for the compartments, so that not all have to be on/off a the same time
3) LEDs for the washrooms/coach vestibules

Regards

Mike C

Hi Mike,

Not a cost effective-option, but the ESU light strips offer some programming options like you mention!

I am about to give these schonwitz economy packs a try, I've heard good things:

If it is era 2 you are focusing on, then I would say yellow lights only
