Marklin HO repairs - SWISS 3012 shorting out problem

Joined: 07/06/2019(UTC) Posts: 14 Location: New South Wales, sunshine bay		I have a Swiss 3012 RE 4/4 Electric Loco. I have been running the loco for the past three days and then it just stopped working. The change over lever is set for track pickup. I have tested taking the bogies couplings and the cover off and the mechanism works backwards and forwards OK I have taken out the top screw with the cover loosely fitting it works also. As soon a the top screw is tightened down it stops working. its as if there is a short. it is difficult to see what is touching inside. When I first obtained this loco back in the 1970s I had this problem. I put some electrical tape over the top of the armature field coil to stop the overhead contact strip from touching and that seemed to work before but doesn't now. Any Ideas ???

Joined: 22/01/2009(UTC) Posts: 14,728 Location: On 1965 Märklin Boulevard just around from Roco Square		It may be a common problem but it would be you who can solve or find it, unless you have a picture from the inside of the loco including the housing it would be very hard for us to establish an opinion what causes the loco to shorten out, one thing you could try if the lever is for the track operation does it still create a short ?, also a picture of the pantographs would be helpful John

Joined: 28/11/2007(UTC) Posts: 7,898 Location: Montreal, QC		3012 is a French BoBo locomotive. 3014 is the Swiss Re 4/4 427. I presume that this is the model you have. There should be a piece of cardboard which prevents the contact for the pantographs from touching the metal of the motor housing. If this piece is missing or deteriorated, it can cause a short. https://i.ytimg.com/vi/b...AMOflE/maxresdefault.jpg When opening the model, you also have to make sure that the contacts for the lights are not causing a short when you remount the shell. The best way to do this is to partially unscrew the lights and then tighten it once the shell is in place. https://img.kleinanzeige...-95b4-935a57ba0cc5?rule=$_59.JPG You do not have to remove the couplings in order to open this model. All that is required is to remove one screw holding the snowplow in place and loosen the other one so that the part pivots and then remove the screw on top. Regards Mike C
