Hi all, allow me to rant.

I bought a used br118. Originally it should contain an older type of MM digital decoder - as far the scribbling on the loco instructions told me - but I was pleasantly surprised that it has a plug-in MFX decoder. Cool. Test it on analogue, and it deives smoothly and silently. Great. Then I try digital on my MS2. fails to find a locomotive. Weird. I try it again. Same. And again. This time it finds a MM 156 address. Ok? I try to operate it. Nothing. No response whatsoever. Try it on analogue yet again. Works. Digital attempt. Nothing. What is going on? Thanks.

From what I can figure out, this AC model 2001-2004 should have a 8-pin LMD Decoder. Ex-Factory, the model should have an address of 03 and it should be detectable as DCC or MM.
It was not a mfx decoder.

If the original owner changed the address, it would no longer be as described in the instructions.
MM (Maerklin-Motorola) addresses can be between 00 and 80 so 156 makes no sense unless this is the DCC address chosen by the original owner.

Try manually adding a DCC locomotive with address "03" and see if it works

If you can, please post a photo of the decoder/inside of the loco.

Regards

Mike C

Thanks. Will post a pic. Id did add itself as "MM-156". But it did not respond to anything. Tried manually. Tried a "loco reset" tried "DCC-3".nothing. It is a thumbnail sized smaller decoder with a "MFX" written on it. I also seen "ZIMO 30" scribbling somewhere. Should I call a fuy that has that test rail hooked on a PC? This has never happened before in my experience.

P.s.: it says

ATMFI
something
Somerhing
Taiwan-z
Numbers
Numbers

On the main chip, and on the plastic cover:

LP V33
MFX

LP could stand for ESU LokPilot. Does it have a blue PCB? A photo might help.

Reminder: MM addresses can be in the range 1 to 255.
The MS2 cannot read the MM address, it just tests all addresses from 1 to 255 and looks for a response, but the failure rate is considerably high.

If the decoder supports mfx, it will ignore the MM address as long as the MS2 has mfx activated.
It could be worth a try to run loco detection again with only MM activated in the MS2.

Hi, I will try to play with the MS2 settings a bit. I am writing this from my phone ATM., so I can't insert pics. I know that the locomotive should detect itself after being put on rails.
I haven't altered the MS2 settings before, and I do run my MM, multi-protocol, and DCC only locos with no issues.

Looks like an ESU decoder on the picture.
On early mfx decoders, sometimes the mfx sender fails, leaving you in a dead lock. The loco "talks" to the controller, but without operational sender on the decoder, the controller cannot register the loco.
The decoder should support the MM protocol, but only if mfx is disabled in the MS2.
Maybe time for a decoder upgrade.

Well, if everything else fails, I will pop in the ESU 59020. Will try to disable the MFX on my MS2 later.

SOLVED!

I disabled the MFX detection while registring the loco. Now it works.

Even if you have mfx protocol enable in the MS2 it shouldn´t stop Roco locomotive if you use DCC protocol too.
I am pretty sure there are bugs in the MS2.
What software version do you have in the MS2?

DCC = Digital Command Control
