I have some older Märklin 4074 autotransportwagen, and it would be nice to have a more narrow distance between the cars. Would you know if there are any shorter couplings available for these kind of cars? NEM pockets are not required here…

Roco made kits for retro fitting wagons with close coupler mechanisms, but I’m not sore if they would fit these easily.

I ended up with an eBay seller of printed NEM adapters, who I have purchased adapters from in the past. He has a very good description of Märklin couplings for the autotransportwagen, and offers three different adapters for these cars. From the description, I find out that I actually need a few of all three kinds of adapters, as I’m now aware I have not only the Märklin 4074, but also other article # of autotransportwagen (see image below). I will follow up, once they arrive!

Have you tried using the 7205 coupler head?

You can also try to swap out the bogies for the ones from the 4153 coach, which had a shorter coupler length

I seem to recall that the final production of the 4095-4099 coaches had the 4153 type couplers and bogies before they were reissued with close couplers and offset pivot bogies as 4295-4298.

Thx Mike! As you can see in my previous posting is that different couplings are required, as there are three different types of couplings on these cars; Different length of the drawbar, different length of the springs. This is what I hope my German friend will solve with his 3D printings.

One further thought. If you acquire one of the more recent models with close couplers and install it between two older coaches, it will reduce the gap between coaches/cars without totally eliminating it.

I saw that someone had redrilled the pivot hole and shortened the springs. Try doing one only and see what happens.

I received the coupling adapters of three different types from the seller linked in post #4 above. As the pocket is very short on all adapters, the coupling NEM male has to be cut a bit and then glued into the pocket. I’m very happy with the result, you can see the comparison below. On R1 the cars don’t touch, as you also can see below from the ”drone” pic.
