Hello

I recently purchased this set online private sale, the set was included with the Orient Express set at basically no charge. Now I can see why. Two of the coaches have different couplers then Marklin couplers.
Which couplers are these?
Is it a big job to change them back to Marklin couplers?
It looks like the coupler housing has been wired shut with very fine wire.
The coaches are otherwise terrific.

Best Regards,
Don

Don,

Here is a bit of info in re knuckle couplers in z-scale:

http://www.zscale.org/articles/couplers.html

Now as to which (MicroTrains or American Z) are on your cars, I can not be sure. The supposed advantage of knuckle couplers on models (which are really modelled after American Railroads rather than European) is in "remote" coupling/uncoupling operations.

Whether you can "Un-Retrofit" these is a question which I am unable to answer Blushing

Hope this helps a wee bit.

Thanks Jimmy that's a good article and it looks like I should be able to just replace the Marklin coupler hooks with a bit of minor surgery.
I assume the coupler hooks are available as a spare part item?

Cheers

Don,

I believe that the part number is E166264. They appear to be available as single items or a pack of 10.

Thanks again Jimmy, I will order the 10 pack as it appears to come with the springs.
I hope there's no other parts in the coupling that have been removed in order to make the conversion.

Cheers

The class 18 of the Orient Express ran a little rough out of the box so I removed the brushes and cleaned the armature, clean the brushes, reassembled it and lubed it up and now it runs very well. I'm very pleased! The set is gorgeous!

Good morning, do the bogies just pop off? I don't see any screw. So I assume I carefully pry between the bogey and the chassis with a small screwdriver to remove the bogie?

Thanks,

Don

Yes, in my experience the bogies pop on and off, but you need to be quite firm with them. I suspect there is a limit to how often you can do this before the hole gets enlarged and doesn't grip the little plastic post.

Is it possible to open the roof?
Perhaps they installed other trucks

Good morning

Yes I can remove the roof and the bogie pins appear similar to other coaches, not screws.
Thanks,

Don

Ah that's good.
Now, is there a reason why you would like to swap them again?

I need to swap them because the micro trains couplings are not compatible with the Markllin couplings in the rest of my collection.

Thanks,

Don

I guess I only need to replace one coupling on the three coaches.

Correction I only need to replace one coupling on the two coaches with the Micro trains couplers.

I acquired some new Marklin couplers with springs.
I attempted many times to assemble the coupling but those springs are just too tiny for my big hands and poor eyesight. Plus the person who changed the couplings cut the pins holding the metal plate on and had used a very tiny wire to clamp it all together. I have no ability to wire it together, you would need a large magnifier and an extra pair of hands.
So I will need to Source a replacement Marklin bogie complete with coupling.
Is there a part number for this? I will keep looking.
Best Regards,
Don

Hello hope all is well.

I know what you mean, small parts and an eye test are a challenging combination. I have big ham fingers too and they sometimes don’t seem to work that well.

I purchased the 3M magnifier headset. It came with three different magnifying lenses. You can still wear your glasses inside them. I wish I had them with the light in them, sure would come in handy. Amazon or eBay has them.

I know you have heard my suggestion of gluing the spring to the coupler post. Just a small bit of super glue will do it, but most importantly let it dry completely.

I do like the idea of leaving the coupler, it is a nice visual.

Take good care.

Dwight

The sound of that small coil jumping.. oh boy. And then you can find it anywhere 🙂

A small dap of woodglue works too
It just has to stay in position!

Thanks for the tip, I managed to get the spring glued into place with a dab of super glue. When I reassemble the metal plate I am unable to get it to tightly fit over the pins, the result is that the coupling flops up and down. I think I've damaged those little tiny plastic pins.
It doesn't help that they were cut or ground flush with the top surface of the plate.
Best Regards,
Don

Turns out the m a r k l i n couplings that I had found are not the right type. They are an old micro trains M coupling, looks quite different from the correct coupling. The time I've wasted!
I have the correct couplings on order now it'll take a couple of weeks.

Don

Well by some miracle I was able to install the Marklin coupling on one end and I kept the micro trains couplings on the rest of the coaches. They do look a lot nicer.
I had to apply a bit of super glue to the metal cover plate of the coupling pocket to keep it in place.
The class 18 doesn't quite have enough power or adhesion to pull all seven coaches up the 1% grade, but it sure looks nice!

If you haven't already, I'd suggest checking that all the coach wheels are turning very freely (a tiny bit of oil on those that aren't). Just one sticky wheel can ruin the run when a slope is involved.

If you only need a tiny bit of super glue. Put a drop on a piece of offcut plastic. Then wipe the end you want to stick through that drop (good for glueing Z gauge people)

Use Zap-A-Gap Zip Kicker CA, super glue accelerant, again you only need a tiny drop to dampen the other surface. Unfold a paperclip for applicator. Use that to apply a miniscule amount onto the other surface.

The super glue will go off in a second. Which is good where you can't remove the air to bond the parts.

Tip: Put the bottle of accelerant in block of wood or make up a frame out of cardboard or plastic. The bottle is easy to knock over. Apart from the expense, a whole bottle over the workbench stinks.

I just use a tiny drop of oil applied with a watch oiler to hold the spring onto the coupler for assembly. The spring has such little mass that the oil's surface tension seems to hold it in place adequately

The MTL couplers are very popular in the US for switching and many modelers swap them for AZL couplers. With a magnet below the track you can uncouple them. Not that I have ever done that. Also they are compatible MTL+AZL OK. I like your solution.
