The recent posts regarding Marklin built dealer layouts reminded me of when I visited Germany in 1987. I remember Marklin HO display layouts on the councourse of several large stations. My memory is a bit vague but I think places like Heidelberg and Mannheim and I'm sure there were more.
They were scenic layouts using M Track of moderate size (2 x 3 metres or so). A glass or perspex case completely covered them and you dropped a coin into a slot and the trains ran round for a couple of minutes. The cases had 'Marklin' in large letters prominently displayed. I assume that the controls would be hidden away in the boxed in area underneath. I assumed they would be visited by a local dealer at some point each day to see to any maintenance or change over of rolling stock etc.

It is the vague memory of these that led to me collecting Marklin years later.
I remember thinking what a good advert for the company since any layout would have to be reliable for it to be left unattended and keep working. They seemed to attract a good viewing public situated as they were in busy areas. Whenever we went through these stations I would always drop a coin in and watch them operating.

Unfortunately I didn't think to take any pictures at the time and I haven't visited since. I wish I could remember more.

Does anyone remember these and possibly have any information and/or any pictures? Do they still have anything similar these days?

Thanks.

I remember the ones in Kassel Hbf, Frankfurt (Main) and others. If my memory is correct, the sets operated on 3 rail Trix Express. On a more recent trip, I noted that some of the remaining layouts now featured Maerklin models made for Trix Express.

I do not recall a Maerklin sign on the layout. It may be that some stations had Trix and others had Maerklin setups.

This is what I remember: https://www.larsbrueggem...ahnhofsmodellbahnen.html

I remember seeing these in the 70s and 80s. I can't remember where now. The ones I saw didn't carry any maker name on them but were clearly M due to the stud contacts.

I know I nearly missed a train through watching one of them. LOL

Thanks for the replies.
The ones I saw were definately Marklin and had the name in large red letters. I had started to collect Z gauge at the time and immediately pounced on anything where the name appeared hence I particularly remember it.

Hi,
Thank you for posting that list.
I have seen the ones in Aachen, Frankfurt and Cologne.
At DM 1.00 for a couple of rounds I spend a lot of money on those :)
I liked the one with the Tower Bridge in the middle the best, just don't remember which one that was.
They were always running, never an issue with derailed trains anywhere, which to me was absolutely amazing.

Here is a picture of the Oldenburg Hbf layout - it has an "M", but it is a bit difficult to ascertain otherwise...Love it magically appeared on my The Facebook feed...I hope it stays...note the pigeons resting, watching the trains go round! LOL

All the display layouts I’ve ever seen in German train stations have been Trix Express. A now obsolete brand of trains. Yes, TE was 3 rail.

Here's a photo I took of the one at Frankfurt am Main Hbf in 2018.

You can see it's one of the standard layouts with the old Trix track, but the controller has been updated at some stage.
