Hi,

I did a basic maintenance to a BR50 of mine. It's retrofitted with mSD3 but had an FX decoder before, so it was digital in the beginning anyways. When I did the retrofitting I had forgotten to remove the two extra condensers. I did that just now, but haven't put them back in order to rule out if that is the reason why the motor now runs with problems or not at all.

So what I did was just to remove old lubrication and graphite with IPA and then re-lubricate the anchor axle tips... And removed the two condensers.

I have a video here. The loco ocassionally runs badly but also completely freezes. I think this is mechanical problem but can't quite figure it out. The slow speeds used to be near perfect, but now it's terrible. Please see the video with sound on, it has two different things in it:


Any ideas what could be wrong?

I suggest you start checking the mechanical side:
- remove the motor brushes
- clean the axles, gears, motor axles using a brush and RS24 Noch cleaning fluid. Dry the loco.
- lubricate using Märklin oil 07149
- gently turn the wheels and look for any hard point (usually a foreign body in the gears that may cause the mechanism to stall but it can also be a wheel "dequarterization" on steamers). Sometimes, the foreign object is almost invisible.

Once the problem is solved, don't forget to run a self calibration of the mSD3 (write 77 in CV7) when the loco is on a loop of R2 rails (or larger), with digital power. Then turn the speed knob to get the procedure started and let it go until finished

Thanks Jean,

This may be a dequarterization problem as now I've seem to have managed to "stuck" the wheels completely... How do I spot the exact place/what's the procedure to fix it? It can be a foreign object also, but I've yet to spot it...

One way is to remove the coupling rods at least on the geared axle. If the axle turns OK with the motor then it is a dequarterization issue.

How to spot the culprit axle?
- one way it to align all rods on one side with the axles along a straight line
- on the other side all rods must be UP or DOWN exactly verical to each axle.
- once the axle spotted, verify also if the wheel flange distance has been modified (14,1 mm or so.

So this is what I did and surely there was an issue which I have now fixed. Also the "permanent stuck" issue got spotted. The middle wheels screw know got stuck on the adjacent rod. The screw is not tightened half a round and now everything works!

This was absolutely of my own carelesness when handling the loco during the motor maintenance. Live and learn.

Great job on cutting and editing your angles on the video and making the sound track seemless during the cuts. Is video your other hobby?

Thanks! Well I try to check that things transition smoothly and also try to find nice angles, but I think video is just a part of the MRR hobby.
