Hi Hess
Surely you know the Märklin 4018 railcar is a trailer (no motor) so, unless you fit a motor, you need a fonction decoder or an inexpensive decoder

Is there room inside? Yes, plenty. Except the central light bulb.

How much does it cost (in the UK I assume)?
On ebay, a cheap DCC decoder starts under 13£

A mLD3 decoder (Märklin MM2 - DCC- MFX) starts at 30£

Note: because I don't live in the UK, you may be able to find better deals

Cheers
Jean

A classic! I'd be tempted to only upgrade to the minimal decoder because the newer ones have better detail, led lighting, interior detail, and sound.

As Jean pointed out, this is not a motorized Railcar, it's just a trailer, and not practical to even attempt to install a motor.

It's normally pulled behind a 3016 Railbus either by itself, or with other 4018 trailers.

Oh, then I would leave it a trailer.

That depends totally on your budget.

You could convert a 3016 to add digital and those are not expensive. You might even find one already converted.

Or, there are new versions already digital from the factory.

If you search google for "Marklin railbus" and click "Images" you will see a huge range, different versions, colours etc with catalogue numbers.

Take your pick and start searching ebay BigGrin
