I would first ascertain if the cs3 is at current software levels. One of the options under the 'settings' tab tells you the software level. A simpler solution would be to connect the cs3 to your internet router using an Ethernet cable and go to the settings tab and tell it to update using the network (check the handbook if you are not familiar with doing this). It will then determine what needs to be downloaded to update it.

That process will also do a certain amount of resetting.

There are two types of "resetting". There is the "factory reset" where you restore the computer to the condition it had when it left the factory. That does in fact remove all the work you have done to it since it has been in your possession. That is only for the direst conditions. The second "resetting" is one I have been urging people to do and that has been recommended for computers since they have been around but it requires some preparatory work on the computer owners part. Most computers in recent use have the ability to save their settings into a removable storage device. The CS3 has a USB port where a thumb drive can be inserted. There is a procedure to store the existing settings on it which is recommended by most experienced computer users. It should be done on a regular basis and before any updates. No one should ever recommend that you "reset" your CS3 without telling you the consequences of a "factory reset" or telling you about the proper way to do it. The second method is often referred to as a "restore" as it restores the computer to an earlier condition.
