I am setting up a couple of hidden yards using s88's, I am unsure of where to place the contact tracks, at the entrance or exit . I know that there has to be an controlled insulated section of track at the exit end to allow waiting trains.
Thanks Ted Morris

Hi Ted! This depends on how you intend to control your trains: With a mobile station? CS2 or CS3? Or even a computer software? The more advanced control, the less need for insulated sections.

I would recommend having contact track at the start of a block and at the end.

A block would be something that is between turnouts. Have a look at this track plan:

This track has 6 blocks, each with it's unique color. The darker colored sections represent the contact tracks.

With a setup like this, "All is possible" if you later wish to have automated driving.

Best,

Depends on whether you want an action to occur when the train enters or leaves the yard.

Exactly, but in case of bi-directional trafic, two is excelent BigGrin

Also one might want to know when a train enters a block in order to reduce speed and at the end sensor, stop the train.

I agree.

You can never have too much information for automation and I would also want contract tracks at both ends.

You may not always use some of the contacts but your options will not be as limited as your layout grows and changes. ThumpUp

I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time.

Since it is a hidden yard one each end should be ok. For visible blocs i also have one in the middle. Used to change speed, play sound or lights.
It is cheat to make(contact track) and a cable. You can by the S88 later if toy choose to use it.
