Hi

Today I would like to present the station Chatelet les Halles in Paris.
It is fairly invisible (completely underground) but much larger than Paris' largest rail station Paris Gare du Nord.
It has 8 lines (many lines of which are fully automated / driverless, sees at peak hour, 1 train every 8.5 seconds (424 trains per hour, some of which double deckers), 1 million passengers per day, 19 pedestrian exits and one large mall with 27 movie cinemas, 150 depatment stores or shops. The underground roads total 4.2 km.

Here is an overview of the visible part from the outside
https://paris1900.lartno.../le_forum_des_halles.htm

The railway / Metro / RER station has more than 800 meters in its widest dimension

Here is a video about its history and present situation. Sorry it is in French

Impressive and frightening

Jean

Yes, wow! Not very different from the new Long Island R.R. Grand Central terminal. It is 15 floors below street level. One escalator descends 7 storeys. The trains don't ascend above ground untll after the 86th. street tunnel in Queens, it'self being one of 3 stacked tunnels.

Hi Jean,
When I'm in Paris, Châtelet always seems like a maze to me; the first time it was intimidating. It's truly amazing this was started in 1900. Thankfully the signage for the Metro and RER are good at helping us visitors. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Brian
There are apps to help you
Here is a video in English on available apps just jump 8:20 into it.
The usable apps are:
- Googlemaps excellent guidance but no ticket sales. No new app to intall
- Bonjour RATP also guidance in English / French only BUT it includes all transportation means (walk, bicycle, taxi, Metro, RER)
* City Mapper specific to large cities in the world convenient if you travel to large cities like London, New York, etc but providing a little less information than Googlemaps or Bonjour RATP

I hope this will make your next visit more fun and smooth.
Cheers
Jean

If I understand this correctly, the new Long Island R.R. Grand Central terminal is a huge project because of its new tunnels under the east river. It is a major help for commuters for great connections.
The specifics in Paris is the very small waiting time between trains as low as 85 seconds.
I need to know more on this Long Island R.R. Grand Central terminal project
Cheers
Jean
