Hi all!

I’m new here, but a long time lurker.

I recently bought a box of old Märklin stuff- plenty of track, a couple of locomotives, and enough cars to keep things interesting for my kids. Convinced a couple of the locomotives to run, but there is one loco which has me a bit puzzled.

It’s labeled Märklin, but does have the pickup shoe i’d expect- instead it has a circular off-center spring loaded pickup underneath. What am I looking at here?

Any other advice for a newbie?

It might be a Fleischmann DC loco with the inverted mushroom thingy that was intended to trigger a certain function determined by the user, for instance the closing of a level crossing or switching a turnout, etc. Many Fleischmann locos feature such a device. Try translating this with www.deepl.com : https://www.modellbahnte...de/artikel/pilzkontakt/#

Thanks Unholz- that makes perfect sense- I don’t think the guy I bought from really knew what he had. (And neither did I!)

I'm not sure it is Fleischmann - it definitely says Marklin on the bottom of the cylinder block, although someone could have replaced that in a repair process with something off a Marklin loco that they had to hand.

But I think it is definitely a 2-rail DC loco, the electrical pickups on the tender wheels look like they will be the total power pickup for the whole loco, as there doesn't appear to be any power pickups on any of the driving wheels, unless it is on the top side of the chassis.

Hi

It is Marklin hamo 2-rail catalogue number 8398.

Maybe Marklin worker forget add or owner removed 'HAMO' sticker underside of loco.

In my opinion it can be reconverted to Marklin. I can see the hole for the pickup shoe screw on the underside.
One new cable re-soldering from one of the motor poles to the pickup shoe and leave only one of the cables arriving from the tender bogies, on the other pole and that should be it, if I'm not mistaken. As the wheels should be isolated you could always bridge the two bogies cables to the same pole so you have current pickup from both axles. I've done a few conversions of 2 rail engines in this way. Maybe the mushroom sized contact should be removed.

BR24? You do know a BR 24? 2-6-0 and Tender with 3 axles. BR 38 Hamo- not Hammo- was the correct answer.

Martin

HAMO 8398, DC sister of Märklin 3098. AFAIK the Fleischmann mushroom contact is standard for HAMO models.

Tom
