I came across some photos of the ICE when it was being tested by Amtrak.

Here are the links:

Would you like to see a F69PHAC in ICE colours from Maerklin?

The second picture was taken in San Jose California. Interesting that they took it all the way out here to test it. The lines at the time weren’t electrified (they are hanging catenary right now). I know it is a diesel pulling it but that picture has to be 20-25 years old.

It just makes me wonder why they would drag it across the country to test on a line that wouldn’t be electrified for another 30-35 years.

The process was part test and part marketing. The trains were tested on the Northeast Corridor (NEC) but then were sent to other markets to display the trains for fans.
I don't know if any tests were conducted in (Pueblo) Colorado as the trains travelled across the country, but that is also possible.

Not sure, bu I think the ICE can be set up as a diesel or as an electric, similar to the engines used on the new Haven when entering New York City.

That ICE was only electric. It needed diesel locos for the demonstration tour from town to town.

The third pic shows the Amtrak ICE AS I RODE IT IN 1993 from Sacramento, CA. I have a souvenir coffee mug from this trip.
Maerklin did a model of this train ca 1993, sans diesel.
