I'll be in the UK from Monday 10 July to Tuesday 18 July.
We arrive in Glasgow from Iceland (don't even ask -- it's all to do with frequent flyer points with SAS on Icelandair), and leave from LHR. We plan to drive down the West coast through Wales to London.
Any suggestions for good MRR shops along the way with Märklin (or compatible) stock? I want to see real items, not on-line!
Also, my wife (AKA Scenery Czar) will want a shop with lots of figures/buildings/trees/bridges etc... |

Yes, I'm well aware of the official Märklin dealers.
I want to know some recommendations by people in the area who know the shops. I specifically asked for recommendations about shops with good stock where I could actually see a large number of items.
Chill out everyone, I want personal opinions and recommendations...not the official Märklin list...

Damon, When I went to Hamleys in central London couple months ago, the store only has may be 10 to 15 Märklin HO items. Those were overpriced and ancient. I believe they are dropping Märklin. I would recommend you call Gaugemaster at 01903884321. They are the UK Marklin Agent and can tell you who has what and where!
Modelzone in London is one dealer. |

There is nothing in Glasgow and although there are plenty of model rail dealers in London very few if any stock Marklin.
The UK is mainly Hornby and British outline most of us who enjoy Marklin buy from Germany. Although the retail trade are to blame so are Marklin for showing no interest in UK sales.

As David said, most UK model shops stock only British outline, usually Hornby and Bachmann. There are many shops scattered around the country stocking continental outline, but Marklin is not the easiest to find. If you are going anywhere near Sheffield, you could try MG Sharp. Have a look on their website. You can see that their stock of Marklin is limited, but they do a lot of other railway items. http://www.mgsharp.comThe main UK dealer, Gaugemasters, used to have substantial stocks, but last time I was there they had cut down to just a few items. What I do when I am visiting somewhere in UK is buy the latest issue of "Continental Modeller" magazine, and have a look at the adverts. However, I would recommend you phone ahead and ask about their stocks before travelling too far out of your way. Ray |

Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

Remember , in UK, the standard scale is 1/76 ( not 1/87). Hornby models for UK are 1/76 scale models.
1/87 is rather rare, I guess.
There are some people campaigning for " european/continental 1/87 scale modelling". Most of them are forming associations.
Am I wrong David?

Re 1/76 or 1/87 I dont think Hornby will change their British outline stuff. UK modellers tend to be a bit behind the times and still make their stations out of cornflake packets etc. There are plastic kits available but not to the German standard and again they are the larger scale. Also digital here is not very big with only MacKays Models in Glasgow who distribute Lenz to the trade doing anything worthwhile.
Perhaps being an island and only running our own trains in the country has held our railway system back which in turn effects the model market.
I would say 1/76 will stay.

Couldn't agree more with David RE: being behind. This is "stone age" country; digital is still being heralded as "the next big thing"...
