Got the Marklin ST 800 with MT 800 middle car running after a 50 year slumber. A big shout out to Jim's Hobby for a part that it needed! It will still need a full cleaning and maintenance! BigGrin

Nice work Thom! What part was it missing?
Any plan to work on the cosmetics, or maintaining the well-loved and played with look?

Mark, it was the "Seitenwange fur Drehgestell" or half of the Jacobs truck casting on an non-powered segment. I am really torn on the condition of the set. This at one time belonged to my uncle who was a machinist for the Great Northern Railway and later the Burlington Northern. And then I got it and it was all downhill from there...As a conservative collector, they are only original once, so I think I will just clean and maintain it. I have a ST 800 G (grun) in much better condition that is a basket case that I am mechanically restoring, so if I want to look at a pretty face? LOL

if I was looking to buy one I think I would prefer one in the condition of yours rather than a repainted one. It shows it is definitely in 'original condition'.

No, they outsourced that to Ritter many years ago: https://ritter-restaurationen.de/en

Hi
No, they used to restore at least 10 or 15 years ago but not anymore.
Ritter Restaurationnen in Germany does though see here https://ritter-restaurationen.de/en/restorations

Hi Thom
These ST800 trains were my first Märklin love but alas I never could get one

Here is my DL800 (1950, with Märklin strong, grey carton box w. wood inserts and spoon pick-ups) with a strong family looks

This is a sleeping beauty in the box

Here is an interesting blog post on the DL800
http://www.eisenbahn.modellbahn.com/DL800.5.html

One thing I never understood was why would a Diesel Electric need pantographs? Extra power? What was the nearest prototype for this model?

At the time (1949) the possibility to drive 2 trains independently with the overhead catenary was the rage and Märklin introduced its first catenary before the war and prepared a second generation just after the war and a third around 1950.
The DL800 or ST800 is a loose interpretation of the diesel electric ALCO PA-1
Loose because:
- fake 3 axle boggies
- "Jacobs" bogies
- never had pantographs

On the other hand this DL800 / ST800 are a mechanical wonder (6 geared axles on the DL800) and were Märklin's top of the line
Cheers
Jean
