Hi,

I've had one of those frustrating days with this hobby - I have a Marklin 3425 Kittel steam railcar that has suddenly gone "dead". It was running fine and then after some time in the box I have tried to run it again and it won't move a millimetre.

This is one of the original Kittels from 1995 that has the brown metal body and delta decoder. I have tried it on two separate digital controllers and an analogue transformer (after setting the dip switches to "off" of course) and I get the same result on each - no movement. However, the headlights and interior lights do work fine in both digital and analogue and increase in brightness as the throttle is increased - it's just that the railcar doesn't move.

I thought it might be the motor (which judging from some other posts on this forum seems to be an issue) but I tested it with DC from a Miniclub transformer (the motor is surprisingly easy to remove with these models) and the motor runs fine in both directions. Likewise the drivetrain is working smoothly when the motor is out. So maybe it's the decoder? Has anyone had an issue like this with their Kittel, and if so how did you fix it?

If it is the decoder, and if the decoder is dead, then I'd love any recommendations or experiences from others who have converted their 3425 from delta to digital. There isn't much room in this model, and the original decoder was a non-standard one-off decoder, likely impossible to get (and there are probably better options now anyway). I'd like to keep the platine that provides power to the motor and includes the surface mounted LEDs if I can...

Any ideas welcomed!

Richard

Hi Richard

Working on a Märklin 3425 Kittel is not easy because there is very little space in it.
On mine I found the following:
- removing the motor is a piece of cake BUT putting it back in GOOD position is difficult. All gears must fully engage with their counterparts. The motor is held in place only when you screw the body all the way without applying excessive force
- the initial decoder was a Delta and it worked fine by me BUT because very simple I replaced it with an mDT3 (cables) lodged near the pickup.
- the difficulty there is the drive shaft just above the pickup shoe.

So now what to do for you?
1- check if your decoder motor output is still OK. Make a temporary connection between the motor and the decoder outputs and check if the motor rotates.
2- If the decoder needs changing then install the mLD3 near the slider. I have added 2 heath-shrink tubes as springs to force the decoder downwards and away from the transmission shaft
3- be extremely careful with the main PCB making sure all your changes there do not come in contact with the metal body

Here is the Kittel during the surgery (mLD3 under the chassis)

Here is the complete unit

Recommendations (if I may)
- the steam rods & distribution are very fragile
- cut without hesitation all un-needed wires as the space is very scarce and it is KEY that the body goes fully home to force the motor in good position.
- grind a little extra space for extra wires on the PCB by milling the underside of the interior decoration (that beige part). I use my Proxxon handrill with a little spherical diamond bit.

I wish you the best for this repair
Jean

Hi Richard/All,

Please read my article on a LokPilot 4 conversion of the 3425 Kittel.

3425 Kittel LokPilot 4 Conversion

This isn't an easy conversion and you must have good soldering and mechanical skills.

The next article is written by Ed Lekanides after he read my article he was inspired to upgraded his Kittel with a LokSound micro. He provided photos and text which I edited and presented on my Tips page.

3425 Kittel LokSound Micro Conversion

I hope the articles provide you with ideas to upgrade your Kittel.

Thanks for the detailed responses - really useful and appreciated!

It's good to know that the conversion is possible, if not easy. I won't bother trying to retrofit sound - just a good quality decoder for motor and light functions will do. Would the best Marklin decoder be something like the 60982 (non-sound but mLD3 and without the 21 pin interface connector, so probably good for small spaces)? Or alternatively the 60972?

Hi Richard

The decoder mLD3 with wires (60982) fits into the Kittel, only underneath (not in the cabin). Its version with 21MTC interface (60972) does not.
I also just installed an ESU Sound decoder LokSound5 micro on a "FestZug" (see below). It is smaller than a mLD3 with tiny loudspeaker that would fit in the Kittel.
The negative side is when configuring with a CS2 or CS3, the only way to program is using CVs and this is NOT user-friendly.
Here is the result. Consider that in the small cabin there is:
- a large weight
- a motor
- a decoder
- a loud speaker
- 2 bi-color diodes and resistors

So it is very crowded and I don't dare to make pictures of the inside
Cheers
Jean
