Hey guys

Kinda kicking around an idea and would like some input. As the title and description states I have an original delta equipped Big Boy from the first issue series years ago, article number 34990. I am the original owner and was kinda of curious on an idea I had, upgrading the delta decoder to a new fully digital decoder. Well question is which one? Marklin? ESU? Leave it alone since it’s original and hasn’t been messed with. It works fine so there are no issues with leaving it as is. What would you do as the owner?
Any input, thoughts, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys!

I'm not the expert, but to me loksound makes a lot of sense. Not sure what motor the marklin big boy uses, I'd assume a DC can in which case it is a streamlined conversion with no motor parts...

Was just chatting about this with a very knowledgeable forum member. The 37990 was kind of a drag with 2 decoders and the unrealistic (but cool for the time!) sound, so buying delta and upgrading to the latest electronics feels like an astute move to me...

Hi
Upgraded my 37990 with msd3 recently, and made a post about it. You might find some inspiration in it, even if you choose a different decoder.

I'm quite satisfied with the upgrade.
the motor is most likely the same as in mine. (Maxon A-max)

Thank you for the replies. I will certainly check out your thread about the decoder upgrade that's what I was looking for. BigGrin

Upgrading my 37990 is in my upgrade queue but I have hesitated because it is fairly complex. I somehow missed your post, which will be a big help when I get around to doing that project. I will have to check because I don't remember the Maxon imprint on the motor, but maybe I just didn't see it. That beast remains one of my favorites but it seems very out of date compared to my newer locos, in both the sound and the giant speed steps.

Thanks for the very helpful input. ThumpUp
Regards,
Jim

I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time.

I have made up my mind I will upgrade the locomotive for sure and bring it into modern age. There are a few other delta engines in my inventory that I want to upgrade as well. The list is gtprowing lol

I think that a great locomotive like this deserves the best upgrade.ThumpUp

I think there has also been a previous thread on upgrading 37990 with a Loksound decoder. Keep in mind that the later 37990's apparently had a Loksound installed ex factory.

There is also one on upgrading the Trix Big Boy to running on Marklin 3 rail.

Threads regarding the conversion of a Trix Big Boy. I'm sure the same info could be used to convert a 37990.

Yes I saw the one discussion about upgrading, but it was after I started this one. My fault I should have done a search first, my apologies.

At first I wasn't going to upgrade figuring that it was the first model run thinking of collector value. However after thinking more about it I came to the conclusion to proceed to modernize. I will read more about doing it hopefully I can achieve it myself since I really don't want to send it out. I don't have much faith in shipping these days.
