Economist ran this piece last week on the relatively sorry state of trans-European rail traffic:

Given the ambitions of EU, much improvement will be needed. Perhaps my grandchildren can enjoy high-speed rail traffic across the continent.

The link works, but the article is behind a paywall so you can't read all of it.

But there are numerous ways around paywalls, a google search will give some tips - not that I'm encouraging nefarious behaviour of course Woot
