Mikado is 2-8-2. This is a 4-8-4 and there are several names for that configuration, like Northern or Niagara.

Union Pacific called them FEF or Four Eight Four.

I call them Northerns, which is the most common name for a 4-8-4 in the US.

The NYC called their 4-8-4s Niagaras because they saw themselves as the best railroad in the world and they had to have their own name and not one related to another railroad.

The UP designation FEF was primarily a class designation and derived as EMD_GP7 said. The UP 4-8-4s were called Northers by UP as well. This loco type was the pinnacle of US passenger steam and there any some beautiful examples of these peak of steam locos still around.

The 844 is one of the finest both back then and still today. It has never been retired by the UP and is kept in top operating condition for us all to enjoy.
Regards,
Jim

I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time.
