I purchased a starter set earlier this year and have been learning as I go. Recently added a Class 260 Diesel loco (39690) to my set. Noted in the manual that functions beyond F16 are only available if I have Software V 3.55. Checked my MS2 and if reading correctly I have v 3.121. However, the MS 2 manual I received with the starter set indicates the instructions are for a MS2 (version 3.55 or higher). After purchasing the starter set I had to have some service work done and as part of that the tech said the MS2 had been updated. The functions at F17 to F20 are working for the Class 260 loco. I'm confused or not looking at the right information somehow. In the MS2 information menu it shows SW: V 3.121 but maybe that is incorrect or not looking correctly. Guess since the Class 260 functions are working I shouldn't worry about it. Is just one of those thing.

If he had updated it correctly it would show v3.155 which is the latest. it may also want to update the track box.

I can't remember the magic incantation to control the upper function numbers, but the booklet should tell you. But do remember that not all locos have functions beyond F16.

Hi.

121 (as in v3.121) is a higher number than 55 (as in v3.55) so v3.121 is a newer release of version 3 than v3.55.

V3.155 as Alan refers to is even newer.

Hmmm..., if you write it like that, then it sounds logical, but you can also number versions and sub-versions in a manner like 3.1 --> 3.2 --> 3.3 --> 3.4 and finally 3.5. In this case, a version 3.1.2.1 is certainly much older than a 3.5.5.

Is there any worldwide identical/mandatory practice regarding these differences of numbering?

We've had this discussion some time ago.

For the MS2, the numerical value applies. For other cases, string comparison is used and "3.2" will be higher than "3.11".

You are putting decimal points where marklin doesn't, so misinterpreting things.

No, that is up to the original writer of the software or the manufacturer of the hardware.
While there are some defacto methods done by software writers there is no standard practice that is adhered to. It all comes down to internal company standards.

Thanks everyone. It is clear as mud now. Confused Actually I get what Tor referred to and makes sense, just isn't the way I was reading it. As mentioned the loco is responding, all is well. Thanks again for the discussion.
