This thread is dedicated to our frustrating show case kings - engines that look stunning but are dreadful runners. I am sure we each have these. I am posting this as I have spent a frustrating day with one of mine to enhance the running capability but with no improvement. My star in this category is from the Italian firm OS Kar - number 2601. This is an ALe 540 that pulls a Le 760. The model is stunning and represents a classic almost art-deco period of Italian design in the 1950's. Some pictures as follows before I nash my teeth on the running characteristics: There are two running issues. The first is the fact that all wheels are driven on the powered car. This means a very long axle and complex gearing. These gears seem to bind slightly on curves - there is a slight extra hum and some stuttering. Unfortunately, I can't seems to figure a way out of this part. The second issue is a dreadful close coupling tethering. The actual tether/coupler mounts pull away from the individual cars. I have glued them several times but they seem to always separate from the unit. This causes at least one of the cars to lose the swing part of the close coupling, causing it to derail. This was an ebay purchase. A stunningly beautiful model but very frustrating. It may be seeing ebay again. Let me know your models that fall into this category

There could be some hope we could help you with but we need more photos from the motor, gears, the coupling should also be presented with some pictures, it may be restricted to a certain radius John |

not sure that looks great - more like a newt, but that is probably the fault of the prototype, not the model.
The Märklin Henschel-Wegmann loco must fall into this thread though. Loco is utter crap. They even included two pickup shoes in the box for K-track and C-track - a clear indication they could not get it to make good contact either. |

I believe that jcftrains is asking to hear about our very own great lookers which run poorly, not advice on his. Mine is My Alco PA pair from the Montreal Limited. That is probably the prettiest diesel loco set I own, beautifully made and it appears to be of the highest quality, yet I have had very few trouble free hours seeing this one run. Everybody must have one or more of these. I know that I do, but I don't want to dwell on that. |
Regards,
Jim
I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time. |
