I have an M track layout and rolling stock, mostly unused, that has sat around for almost 60 years now; the brass contacts in the 7072 control boxes (red, green buttons) have become oxidized and no longer conduct. As an alternative to making up new controls from commercially available switches, can anyone recommend a a way to clean those contacts? My initial thought is to use vinegar followed by a neutralizing wash with a bicarbonate solution and perhaps a final wash with rubbing alcohol (when it is once more available from covid sanitizing demands). Is this likely to be effective?

You can try it, but I use CRC QD contact spray cleaner. It's plastic safe.

Fibreglass propelling cleaning pens are very good for clearing oxide and dirt from contacts, good for commutators as well.
