I have 3 of these solenoids but don't know what they are for. Not semaphores, not warning signals, just the solenoid with and extra red cable, where does it go?

They are universal relays 7045 by Märklin

N and M identify the sockets on the back of the solenoid, correct ?
What do I plug in these two sockets ?

But the L cable where does it go ? Into a device or in a 7072 and to do what ?

Hello,

The relay establishes an electric circuit between LM or LN, depending on the coil position.

You can use it to provide a light switch on/off for instance...

Try to download the 0341 signal book here http://www.lctm.info/Sec...lioteca/Libros/index.php . There are a few examples of use of 7045 in it.

A K84 (old 6084) is/was the same than 4 x 7045.

I use one of them for the power to my alpine-station helix;
When the train enters the helix going UP, a circuit-track changes the relay to power the helix with HIGH voltage.
Another circuit track at the top of the helix, changes the relay to power the helix with LOW voltage for trains going down.

On my previous layout I also used them as a kind of "1-bit memory"; Every second train would stop, wait and allow itself to be overtaken in a station.

They are extremely rugged, and have no problem with having the coils powered continuously. It gets hot, but it doesn't break! Old-school vintage analogue! ThumpUp

so this means that I could use the k83 with a 7045 to control the magnet of my 7051 crane ?
Marklin's digital booklet says that I can control the 7051 with a k83 and a k84, which is similar to 4 x 7045, to control the magnet.

Yes, among other things you could control your 7051 magnet with it. Other applications are allow a bi-directional signaling, change the voltage when uphill or downhill

Operation succeeded!! The 7045 controls the magnet perfectly. In order to do this I have to use 3 of the four ports of the k83
One for the 7045
One for lowering/raising the hook
One for the rotation of the crane

I enjoyed doing this experiment 🙂
