I purchased four Marklin Gauge 1 Turnouts -- I think they're 13621 EMW:

Gauge 1 Turnout

I'm now installing them on the layout, but they're not working as I expected. My other Marklin turnouts of the same vintage throw with about 18v AC. These only buzz and try to throw. I've tried as high as 29v AC, and they try harder, but still don't throw.

Can anyone tell me what the proper voltage is for these? Are they DC only?

Many thanks,

Jeff

Hi Jeff
I checked in the 1928 Märklin catalogue (paper Märklin repro) and your switches are on page 35, article number EMKW (pair of symmetric 1 gauge points 13621 and 13611).
The description does not indicate the voltage, but regular points EMW (same page) description says: pair right and left points for electric trains. Operation force is from 110 V - 250 V by inserting a command (Stellpult).
On the 1932 catalogue, same symmetric switch article number 13621 and 13611 (1 Gauge) is now for 20 V operation
I cannot send you the 1932 catalogue as the file is too large for the forum. If you are interested, let me know but I need your email address to send it.

NOTE: because the same product was for 110-250VAC and later for 20VAC use caution in testing (short impulse and no direct contact with mains)
Cheers
Jean

Jean --

Thanks so much for the reply! I tested this afternoon using 12v DC with more success. One switch threw (if hesitantly) at that voltage, and the other came closer. I'm thinking they probably want 20v DC.

Of course, I own no such transformer. Do you know if Marklin or Bing made a prewar transformer with an AC input and a 0-20v DC output???

Yes, I'd love to see a copy of the catalog. My email is clint@clintjefferies.com. If you take a look at the catalog page of my website, https://clintjefferies.com/catalogs.shtml, I have scans of 1905 and 1906 Marklin reprints. If you're OK with my adding your Marklin catalog to that page, I'd be happy to. If you'd rather I didn't - no problem. There are also a couple of Bing and Bassett-Lowke catalogs and a Carette brochure (along with a bunch of American companies.)

All the best,

Jeff

Hi Jeff
I just sent the 1932 catalogue. I do not own any copyright and I did not scan it myself but naively I think it is OK to put it on your page if access is free.
Cheers
Jean

I sent the 1935 one and recommend you visit this website (German) on toy trains catalogues https://www.conradantiquario.de/katalogservice.html
They have all Märklin catalogues from 1925 until 1940 and plenty of other brands
Hope you like it
Jean

Jean -

I got the catalog, and thanks so much! Thanks also for the catalog link. I turn to old catalogs a lot -- mostly to figure out what I'm bidding on, or just bought <g>.

All the best,

Jeff
