In Marklin's book "Running Trains Digitally with CS3" on page 152 under the chapter wiring basics, three methods have been mentioned:
1. star-shaped arrangement for small layouts;
2. Network or ribbon circuits for narrow or modular layout; and
3. Ring circuits for large layouts.

While I think I understood the star-shaped arrangement and ring layout, I struggled to understand the network or ribbon circuits. Can anyone explain?
The other issue where any guidance is helpful, when is the layout considered, large? length of track, or number of locos run?

Cables that are male one end and female the other.
The cable diameter could be round or flat.
