Hi, markliners.

Got a Montreal Limited. It runs, makes noise, all good.

Inserting the couplers was tricky but I think I got them in correctly.

Except... the dome car won't light up. Pretty sure there's something loose in there.

Having added lights to Harry Potter Express cars recently, I'm confident this problem can be fixed. But the car doesn't have a screw to lift the top off.

So before I start jamming an exacto knife underneath there, does anyone have any experience opening these cars.

Thanks!

Based on the photos you posted, there should be a wheel (return) contact on the second bogie. Have you checked to make sure that it is properly contacting the axles?

One last question. When the coaches are all coupled, is it just that one coach that has no lights or is it all the coaches on one side of that coach?

If the other coaches have lighting, that would suggest that there may be a wiring issue with the lights in that coach or with that coach's ground/return, as the current is still making it through to next coaches. If the adjacent coaches are not lit, there may be a problem with the current conducting couplers.

Regards

Mike C

All cars light up except the last one.

To open a car, remove the blue end caps gently. Once those blue plastic ends are off, you can pry the side of the aluminum body off at any point and it comes up and reveals all of the innards (thanks Will Goodnight, foumaro, mikec).

We can see that the springs in one of the cars (either the one that didn't light up or the previous one or both) don't make contact properly.

So, now that we have two cars open, it's decision time: 1) get rid of the spring/plate contraption and simply use a wire; 2) replace the light bulbs with LEDs and associated rectifier/etc. as I've done with my Harry Potter cars.

Thanks for the hints.

Regards,

Tony

Got rid of the springs and replaced the two AC light bulbs with LEDs. Waiting for rectifier circuits to do the other three cars.

Done for now.

What next? Remove the pick-up shoe from the last car and add a relay to the second A unit hooked up to aux (F1) to turn lights on and off? I haven't opened that unit up yet. Does anyone know if there is a wire there?

Hi,

While you are referring to the observation car, the photos of the opened car show a dome car. AFAIK the worm-like observation car at the train end is feeding (via a pickup shoe) and controlling (via a decoder) the lights in all cars. I opened one of my 26600 California Zephyr dome cars for comparison (see photo) which doesn’t contain any of the fancy electronics displayed.

I am also surprised that you found light bulbs installed in the consist (not to mention that fiddling around with “mechanic” coupler springs would have any impact on the electric lighting). A humble question: Did try to couple the troublemaker directly to the “feeder” car (thus having only two cars on rails), then swapping directions to see if that produces any result?

Yep, the unlit cars were a dome car and a passenger car (original post edited).

I went ahead and opened the observation car (the one at the end with the pickup shoe, to be clear) which I have not converted yet. It has two AC light bulbs AND LEDs! That's why the colors seemed weird to me. Notice the surface mount rectifier and resistors to drive the LEDs. No decoder present.

So I could, theoretically, remove the AC bulbs right now, add an LED strip, and drive it from the built-in circuit. Gotta measure that output voltage before the resistors.

Cheers!

Interesting, that made me curious, so I opened my domed observation car, too:

On the last photo the “mouse piano” for the decoder address is visible.

Ok, that worked. 14V DC at the rectifier output. A resistor in series with the LED strip should do it as always. Removed the black wire plug and soldered directly to red on the metal plate. Funny, I didn't see any metal springs like in the rest of the cars, just wires, hmmm. Might still get rid of the pickup shoe later.

Ta!

Thanks for the pictures
I like this train a lot. I also like converting all bulb lighting by LEDs: much more reliable, low consumption and evenly distributed lighting
Bravo
Here are some of my conversions

Well, that worked out okay. The pickup shoe in the observation car is now gone and all car lights are controlled by a relay set by the function key. Still two cars to convert.

Cheers
