Hi friends,

Some items on eBay provide a good opportunity to learn about Marklin boxes. Unfortunately these are modified boxes, but that helps us distinguish what originals are like. The first is this blue 349 car from the 1930s. It has a brown box with black label common in the late 1940s. In the 1950s we still had the black label, but with red bicycle boxes. We even see a date stamp with the number "9" for 1949.


Likely the label is original but the number was changed. The next one is more deceptive. The label is likely fake and the stamp is completely wrong. There is no "349 E" that was ever stamped on a box! The 8 stamp on top is supposed to mean 1938, which could be correct, but it's likely this stamp is not original too:


Finally this third box is perhaps original, but the model number was changed too:


There is much debate about posting this information in a public forum. Luckily most forgers do not try very hard to make them look original so it's better for collectors to know and train there eye. You can almost always spot the difference!
