Hi all,

I guess it's the COVID madness, but I have just purchased my first ever Gauge 1 equipment, a Märklin 55045 start set...

Has anyone here tried adding Telex to the BR80?

Well, I'm having one of those days.

I set up the track this weekend (which was a learning experience - those track clips are weird), but sadly things didn't go to plan.

The locomotive seems to have a mechanical problem :-( . I bought the set new from a dealer, so I'm not going to take anything apart - I've just sent them an email and hopefully we'll get it resolved somehow. It's a disappointing start to my Spur 1 career.

Meanwhile I thought I'd post the symptoms here. It looks to me like a problem with the gears - either a missing tooth or a foreign object, but here are the symptoms:

The drive train sticks and hesitates at low speed, and then starts making a loud noise and jumping as speed increases. I didn't dare go fast because it sounds like something is going to break. Here's a video:

(turn your sound up)

At first I thought it might just be a bent side-rod, but couldn't see anything wrong there. Also, it happens roughly every one-third of a wheel turn, whereas a driving rod problem would normally happen every full turn of the wheels. It happens both forwards and backwards. Sometimes on a big hesitation it makes a loud plasticy clacking noise as it releases. I think it's a problem with the gears inside the locomotive.

If the dealer gives me the go ahead I'll take it apart and have a look inside.

Does it do this close to the track feed? I need to run extra feeders for the One Gauge..

Also do you have the track clips on every join??

It could also be hard grease.. That set is a few years old I think..

In the video we are starting on the track that has the power feed. Yes I put the clips on at every join.

Power is good, it's definitely mechanical. The mechanical clacking noise is quite loud, and you can see the loco jump up when it happens. (you can see it start doing it in the video - it gets worse as speed increases).

Yes it has been sitting on the shelf for a few years - it's a possibility.

Thanks for the suggestions.

This loco just needs a good transmission clean and some grease;
Lighter fluid will do the job , and some teflon grease will smooth it out .
Too bad you're so far away: it's a 5 minutes' job!
Bad/ negligent/don't really care dealer! He should have tested it before shipping.
I'd give him a piece of my mind, I tell you!

OK! I'm in Corona Virus lockdown in Melbourne so it'll take me a few days to obtain the teflon grease, but I'll do that.

That's very kind! If I was anywhere in the neighbourhood I would take you up on that.

Thank you,

On my 2.4m x 4m G1 oval I need at least 4 feeder points. A sure indicator of power dropouts is locos with sound that experience sound cutout.

With the dealer's permission I removed the bottom plate from the loco.

The lubrication is still liquid, but two teeth are broken off the plastic drive gear:

This is at the lowest speed setting. You'll see it turn smoothly and quietly, and as it turns note the gap on the smaller plastic gear where two more teeth should be.

The loco drove a total of about 10 feet, and misbehaved from the first moment, so either it was already broken, or was jammed up and it broke as soon as I started it.

We'll see what the dealer wants to do.

I'm very disappointed.

You need to change the privacy setting of the video - it won't play

I wonder if it was a previous return to the dealer as defective and he simply 'forgot' it actually had a fault?

You purchased it on the expectation it would be a working model so I see three options;

1: Full refund, walk away (except now you quite like the idea of G1 right?)

2: Dealer repairs the item at his cost, you are happy

3: Dealer offers partial refund based on likely cost of repair and you do it yourself, but confirming before accepting that you can actually get the required part

I can understand how you'd be disappointed

I don't think that option 3 is realistic for a new item purchased from a dealer. There are consumer rights in play here. The loco needs to be fixed by the dealer, replaced by the dealer or refunded by the dealer. The customer should not have to fix anything that was not their fault - in this case it is clearly a fault with the gear.

OK, the video says it all
It is a simple matter to replace that composite gear

The exploded view of the loco is here

5503 exploded view

Part number is E585860, and it's sold a set of 2 (you'll have a spare..Wink ), is available on the marklin store < https://www.maerklinshop...Search=58586&submit= > and costs all of 6 Euros!

I know it's complicated to get parts in Oz, but at least you can tell the dealer all he has to know to order these for you!
Good luck
Hope this helps
Jacques

I've had a similar problem with my E 19 from a sole importer from Sydney many years ago, I've send the loco to him complaining about the loco doesn't run smooth, He send it back saying he couldn't find anything, after this I've opened the loco and found one of the cog wheels teeth were missing, so much for a.) service, b.) looking for the problem, c.) fixing it or sending it back to Märklin., this is the problem here in Australia, a dealer doesn't want to bear the cost of postage by sending it back to Märklin, also repairing a loco is not in their interest. and in those days you had to send the whole loco back., it was new when I bought it and never had a run until the day I've realized there is something wrong with the loco, this really turned me off buying Märklin locos.
