Has anyone ever taken on the task of painting their own HO scale Preiser figures? There is a world difference in the price over the ones that are already painted.TIA Lloyd

My son (now 12 yrs) has painted a lot of Preiser and Roco figures with very good results for his layout now and then in the last 3 years... We (ok, he...) use Tamyia acrylic paint for this and paint with brushes of different sizes, the finest used to paint eyebrows, ties, buttons, leather straps and such...

After painting, a "black wash" (diluted black paint) is used to give details more "visual depth"...

It is really easier than you initially think and also very fun to do, and well worth it... Especially since those pre-painted Preisers are darn expensive...

So, a good inventory of varying colors and brushes of different small sizes will make it a fun part of the hobby... The skills needed will come naturally already after a few figures...

Hi Lloyd,all

quote:
Has anyone ever taken on the task of painting their own HO scale Preiser figures? Except for my lok crews all the figures on my layout.Let's face it,even a small layout needs alot of taxpayers!
Here's what I do:I first go over the figures with a hobby knife to remove any flash, next I airbrush them with Floquil's 'flesh',this serves two purposes,it acts like a primer on the white plastic and it paints the faces, hands and leg quick!
Next thing to do is paint, now this can become tedious so what I'll do is take out some paint and paint as many as I can,or when i am painting something else pull out the figures and paint a few when the bottle is out.
When that is all done,I will like the Webmaster said apply a wash.I use two types, one is a 1/2" squiggle of burnt sierre(sp?) artist oil color and mix it into a pint of thinner. This goes on the 'clean' people, for the Bw and other 'dirty' folks,I use a ink black wash 2 teaspoons of India ink mixed into a pint of rubbing alcohol.
The next step is that I drybrush the figures(slightly) using an off white, this really brings out the excellent details!
Last but not least I will airbush a matt finish on the figures.
A few other tips:
1) keep the figures on the spruces(tree) will doing all of the above, makes handling them easier. You can touch them up when you remove them.
2)Unless you have to don't glue your figures down, you might what to change the scene someday.Use a product called 'Mini-hold' dollhouse modellers use it to attach painting to wallpapaered walls. It's a wax that will hold the figures in place(even in scenery material),but can be removed.

Hi Kevin, all:

Would it be possible for you to post the part numbers of the unpainted Preiser figures? It would be helpful for online ordering purposes.
Also, the part number for lok crews? I have been searching for lok crews at the local hobby stores for ages...
Last but not least, does Preiser have unpainted passenger figures?

Cheers...

Hi Kevin, John, all:

John the link you provided has a picture for every item and that is so useful! Not only for Preiser, but also for other manufacturers such as Heki.

Kevin, thank you very much for listing those part numbers!

Hi all,
First, I beg your pardon for not to pay attention and being so absent-minded. I think I need some holidaysThanks God, April is near-by (Holy Week in Spain). As you have (for sure) noticed, I have duplicated such a topic like this. Well, almost all that I asked for, is answered, thanks for that. Now just another couple of questions: have you tried any alternative to Preiser figures? Are Preiser´s the best in your opinion?
Best Regards

Juan Carlos

Well, we started with a bag of Roco figures since they were much cheaper, and we only "needed a few" (then...). They did not have the same quality as Preisers but turned out quite well when painted.

Hi Juhan,Kevin, Thanos, all,
I´m going to start painting this week-end, and I´m wondering if it´s convenient to paint figure´s eyes. I´ve seen some of the painted figures at the shop and in Preiser´s medium series, and they don´t paint eyes at all. I think it must be difficult, to do and to obtain good results.

Hi Juan,all,
There is an old adage in painting: "If you can see it,you can paint it!"
For HO it maybe too time consuming to paint the eyes, you'll need a wire to do it and very few visitors will appreciate your efforts,....The two things one can do to make your figures 'come alive' and is to use a black/brown was to bring out those details in the face and to drybrush the figures. One can also chop a arm here and there to change a figure so it does not look like 1,000 of other ones,...

Also,I am sure that al of you have noticed that Faller/Vollmer,Noch,etc are coming out with their own line of figures.Well they ALL look like Preiser figures to me and if not that Merten, which Preiser bought a few years ago,...

Sorry to digress a little from the topic...
But does anyone know if someone makes H0 birds (the flying kind)?
I mean - there are ducks, swans, hens etc available, but what about all those crows, pigeons, falcons, eagles and such that are missing from the sterile mrr skies & trees... In real life there are a lot of birds around wherever you go...

Well, we have at least seen them try to fly in the Chicken Run movie... What decoder do you intend to use, and how will the mechanical setup look like?

Hi all,
I painted last weekend my first "preisermen", they were (HO) railway employees. What I did was as follows:

I kept figures in their spruces, as Kevin suggested.
I took out burrs, with hobby knife (also from Kevin´s advice)
I sprayed alcohol on the figures, to disolve any oil from surface.
I painted the whole figure (all of them in the same tree) with primer (foundat.white)
I painted the whole figure, with base colour (flat flesh). Maybe previous step could be avoided, using this layer as priming.
Then selected one colour (eg. Prussian blue), and used it on all clothes/areas I wanted to paint of this colour in all the figures, or variations of this colour (adding white, black,...). After this, I did the same with other colours.
Then, as was suggested by Juhan and Kevin, I used a "wash" over faces, hands,..., and details came up.
I finished with a matt varnish.

I used acrilic colours "Model Color" from AV Vallejo brand, that are also available in other european countries, they dry quickly and are easy to clean. I´m really happy with results, only one advice : "General Surgeon warns this activity can be addictive"
Thanks to Kevin and Juhan for their "quick guide to preiser-painting" and best regards to all of you.

I have nothing but total admiration for anyone that can paint eyebrows on a 1cm high figure!

Hi all:

Just some Preiser figures painted at my little shop of total addiction by my wife! I couldn't focus more clearly but you can get the picture. Figures have not been face washed (yet) and varnished. However, figures have been painted with latest fashion colors!
