Hello friends.

Very often questions about 1-scale tracks appear, so I took some pictures.

From left to right: Märklin, Peco and LGB.

From top: LGB, Peco and Märklin.

Wheels: Left is Märklin, right is LGB.

Regarding rust on the stainless Märklin tracks: I see it as “flying”- or surface-rust,
the same thing will happen to your stainless knives and forks if you leave them out,
or leave them in water with ordinary iron or steel.

John, now that was a tough question.

LGB: I don’t see them as an option for Märklin trains, far too much out of scale for my nice models.
I only have them because I bought a used LGB starter set, with a razor-sound equipped Stainz, and a Matra crane.
Only bought because I wanted the crane, I have plans ( thousands biggrinbiggrin ) to rebuild it to Märklin-use.
Matra crane: http://home.wanadoo.nl/general....lgb40420_matra_crane.htm

Peco: Very nice tracks, extremely nice and good working turnouts, nickel-silver so you can solder them,
life-long guarantee, even when used outdoors.
Their turnouts have a little plate, which you can take of, if you want to
drive LGB trains, and leave on if you run Märklin trains. Note that the turnouts are “life frog type”.
PECO have only made 3 1-scale items, 90cm flexible track, left turnout and right turnout. ( + small parts accessories ).
Only negative thing for me is the radius, 10 feet, a little too big for indoor in my house,
but when it comes to my one-day-to-be outdoor layout, I think it will be Peco.
When it comes to correctly prototypical look, I don’t like the track not having flanges, but that is necessary for the flexing.

Märklin: Very nice tracks, most prototypical look, stronger than you might expect, if laid properly.
Not easy to connect power to, sine you can’t solder on the stainless steel, but I’ve found a solution,
and have just now posted a topic about how-to-do
Since my house is being rebuild to fit Märklin 1,2m radius, and I have a lot of it, it is my indoor choice,
for the permanent layout I’m working on.
About my house being rebuild, please have a look: http://www.maj.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=108225
If you look close, on two of the pictures you will see a BR 18.4, 54561, with 2 wagons behind, on first floor of my house,
during last summer’s rebuilding project.

I hope this answers your question.wink

Wow, I'm quite impressed by the Peco turnout! Unfortunately the only thing I own in 1-scale is a 55003 Livesteam 18.4. It's great but I won't be able to affort more 1-scale stuff for the moment. But I almost can't wait 'till I've finished my study, found myself a house with garden to start my own outdoor layout.
Nice information Per! Thanks!

John: You are right about the tracks being sturdy; it’s the plastic you have to be careful about.
I’ve read once about a guy who had to re-do his complete garden layout, because if it’s not proper laid,
the plastic will break if an animal or child steps on it. I just can’t find that page again; but I remember
the guy being impressed himself, by the fact that some of the track sections had almost no connections
between brass and plastic anymore, and still he was able to run the trains. Being proper laid is of cause
important for all kind of tracks ( And women biggrinbiggrin ) .

Sander: I’m quite impressed too, they are excellent machined and the tongues go really tight/well,
compared to Märklin, where the tongues sits “loose”. Hope you know what I mean.

Regarding the “electrofrog”, Peco offers a switch that fits under the turnout to control power to the frogs.

John: Try the same test with a woman wearing high heels, and the tracks laid on
grass or sand, then you will know what I mean.

And especially for you: ( Music! )
