DTM bearings and gears.jpgDear All

For the last 10 years I have been compiling a Hornby-Dublo Technical Manual. This is for Hornby-Dublo trains made by Meccano Ltd from September 1938 to May 1965. The book is all done in Adobe products such as Photoshop and Indesign, and so the artwork is all to a very high standard. Dublo originally had 18 factory service diagrams, this has been expanded to 140 to include wiring diagrams, factory assembly drawings and maintenance diagrams. The book will be 304 pages, hard covered with stitched binding. There is a graphic of nearly every part made with a compendium parts list of most dimensions for them. Using Meccano production records the information is as accurate as possible and there is great detail of long forgotten information rediscovered. Publication date early 2020 with one distributor in the UK and one in Australia.

The book is a club production of the Hornby Railway Collectors Association of Australia Inc. All authors profit is to the HRCAA club and charities so is a not for profit publication. Search for ‘MKN digital train repairs’ for more information. The book is not on Marklin of course, however Marklin repairs are also a great interest of mine. In fact for a long time I was doing the Marklin repairs for All Aboard in Mittagong Australia. However their Marklin repairs are now done in-house.

The book is quite special in that it is a specific repair manual for a particular brand, and has from my experience never been undertaken before. The book has many pieces of rare Dublo artwork, all remastered and a great interest for anyone just interested in Dublo. A sample page of all bearings produced by Dublo is attached.

Regards
David

This is exceptional, I cannot imagine how many hours such a work would take. Congratulations!

Looks like I will have to find more room in the library for this manual . I have all of the first edition Cavendish Books on Hornby , Meccano , Dinky toys etc with the idea that I may be the only idiot collector of the complete set in Australia . Do you have a rough figure on the sale pricing in 2020 please as I have a couple of other large price books to buy next year when they will be published .

Cheers Tom in OZ .

Dear All

As Tom has suggested New Cavendish have already published a book on Hornby Dublo and this was written by Michael Foster in the UK. Michael has done the forward in the Technical Manual and is actually helping me have it printed in the UK. Michaels book ended being in print for 34 years and 54,000 were printed. It is regarded as the highest selling model train book ever sold in the UK and is a very special book. My aim is to print 700 copies and that will probably be it. I have the great problem of outlaying a large amount of money and relying on sales in a distant country where the demand is, not Australia.
The books are 30 pounds each plus 4 for postage in the UK. In Australia because of the high freight and duty costs to import them from the UK they will be $96 plus $12 postage. The PDF files are already finalised to be sent to the UK printer. All we are waiting for is the response from the December UK adverts to see if may be even more than 700 should be printed. We expect the files will be uploaded in January, books printed by early March.

Best regards
David

Dear All

Just an update on the book as many are still looking at the post. We put adverts in the December British Model Railway press and have had a good response. We are going to print a few more copies, so the final amount will now be 750. So far we have had 300 prepaid orders, so looks to be very popular. The people that have preordered the book have come from everywhere. Three UK rock stars have done so, one of which model railways layout was featured recently. Views on the the website (about 500 for the book) firstly come from the UK, then Australia and then the USA. We had no idea there was anyone in the USA interested in Hornby-Dublo having had stopped production 50 years ago. This does not consider Wrenn which continued to 1992, and was the old Dublo tooling. The book does have exploded diagrams for the non Dublo Wrenn locos such as the Royal Scot and Brighton Belle.
The book is now in RIPPed form at the printshop and we should have a pre-print copy very soon. The aim is to have the books starting to be posted in the 3rd week of February 2020.

Best regards
David

Dear All

Just like to post that the Hornby Dublo Technical Manual is completely sold out in the UK, 530 books were sold over there. Just a few left in Australia out of 220, however basically put aside as not concerned with the sales of them anymore.
There are requests for a reprint from various people, however there were many complexities for the first edition, which really stops a second. There was an outlay of a lot of money for a start and had to trust distributors on the other side of the world.
In the end, the goal has been achieved of actually printing the book so will not do it again, I am more interested now in new Marklin model rail projects. My wife even said it quite well, you are a collector, so let it be and make the book a collectors item.

David

Congratulations! A specialist publication with a limited market that has sold out is not such a common thing!

Of parallel interest must be the new work by Chris Graebe, co-author, along with his late wife Julie, of the book The Hornby O Gauge System in the Hornby Companion series. His latest work, self published, is Hornby O Gauge Trains in France. In a similar format and at 462 pages long is a worthy companion to the earlier book and must suely be a labour of love. It can be obtained from Chris by conacting him at chris@grandjunctionbooks.co.uk or PO box 939, Berkhastead HP4 2ZW, phone 07847 096337. The cost is £35 plus £4.50 UK postage.
