Amongst several sections of M track that I have bought second-hand are a number of 5115 'kontaktgleisstuck gerade' - track contact sections. Can anyone explain to me the purpose of these sections of track, and how they should be incorporated into one's layout?

They are used in conjunction with the automatic 7192 level crossing. The actuator tracks and the crossing can only be separated from each other by using the 5115 and 5116 tracks. (5116 is a curve similar to 5100)

Thanks polabear! I have also purchased a 7192 level crossing, but it was missing the actual M track sections and came without instructions! Am I right in assuming that the actuator tracks you refer to are the M 5145 track sections?

Not exactly. The actuator tracks that come with the crossing are the same as 5107, (1/2 straight), but have a cut in the rail on one side. I'm not sure they had a catalogue #. If you look at the 5115 you have, you will see red dots on one side at each end,(if not worn off). There is also a cut in the roadbed parallel to the rail in that location. This indicates the insulated rail. The correct actuator tracks also have the dot and cut in roadbed. (They do not have the sockets in the side of the roadbed that are on the 5145's.) When setting up the crossing you keep all the dots along one side of the tracks.
I've never owned a 5145 but looking in the manual it is possible they might work - someone else on the forum may know.
