The previously announced adjustment of the non-binding price recommendations for some articles with effect from 01.05.2019 has already been implemented.
The 2019 novelties and the MHI articles are not affected by the price adjustment.

I'm puzzled. I have not analyzed this enormous list, but it seems to be mainly fairly hefty price increases.
You both say it is good business management. Depending on circumstances, raising prices may or may not be a good idea, what am I missing?Confused

I don't believe you are missing anything.
My statement was made as a positive response to what might be usual complaints about rising prices.

Manufacturers raise their prices after careful consideration of their profit position.
They make the decision based on a number of factors which may include competition prices, costs of rent, raw materials and labour.
It might be that Maerklin have a new system that tracks real time costs of each component process.
Having assumed that Maerklin wish to stay in business, I see raising prices as indicative of their need to continue profitability.
I applaud their decision on that basis, with no more understanding of their processes or underlying business position than yourself.

If there is too large an impact on sales, it is possible the Company will adjust them again.

I agree with Kimball.

In the past Märklin was quite good at making model trains but not so good at operating a profitable, sustainable company. Anyone as heavily invested in Märklin trains as I am has obvious cause to want them to remain in business, so pricing their products at a point where they are profitable to make is to my advantage. Right now they seem to be having more of a problem making everything that they can sell than finding buyers, so that supports them raising prices as well.

I don't like higher prices any more than the next guy, but they are a fact of life in all consumer products and they are preferable to seeing Märklin wither and die. Just look at what a new car costs today compared to 20 years ago and you can see that Märklin has most likely not raised prices sufficiently in the past. Many luxury products see their sales increase with rising prices due to increased perceived value, and since Märklin seems to be positioning themselves more for collectors, that may well work for them as well.

I think that the price increases on average are pretty straightforward but I also agree that the variances from model to model follow no pattern that I can detect and some are fairly extreme compared to the mean. That is above nominal inflation rates but reflects the fact that Märklin was a charity case for many years and that the new owners want them to pay their rent. If I had more free time I would love to see which specific items warranted a 10% increase while some only a little over 4%. That might illuminate where they are wanting to take Märklin overall, where their costs are too high or where demand indicates that prices should have been higher and what type of locos they want to focus on in the future.

Things are definitely changing at Märklin as many here have wanted for a long time. It all has to be paid for by someone and that would be us, the long time loyal buyers of their trains. I have a ton of trains and I am buying fewer but more special models, which falls more in line with the other things that I collect.

Luckily that works for me but I am sorry that it squeezes others out of this amazing hobby and maybe it is finally time for normal MRR folks to consider Märklin's hobby line which contains some amazing values. I value some locos that I paid less than 300€ for as much as some much more expensive locos.

10% increase on #36244 DB Br 24, this is the cheapest fully-featured tender locomotive on the market. This tender-locomotive, although small, but include sound decoder, smoke generator, and metal boiler. Good quality (made in China)
1.75% increase on #39617 PRR double unit Alco class PA. This is already over-priced before, thus would not warrant any increase.

There is another situation which has been discussed here in another thread that hasn't been mentioned in this thread, and that is the pay level at the Gyor factory, where they have difficulty holding onto staff. The auto manufacturers nearby are paying more, and this increase could reflect a significant pay rise at Gyor to attempt to stop the churn of manufacturing staff on the factory floor. Such a pay adjustment has to reflect in the end prices of product eventually.
